MiraCosta College proudly announces the recipients of the 2026 Medal of Academic Merit, the college's highest academic honor.

Sponsored by the MiraCosta College Foundation, this prestigious award is given annually to five exceptional students nominated by faculty members for their academic excellence and community involvement. These distinguished scholars have maintained a minimum GPA of 3.5 in degree-applicable courses and are recognized for the breadth, depth, and rigor of their academic achievements.

George Gorges began his journey at MiraCosta, unsure of his path and doubting his academic abilities after struggling in school and taking a gap year. With encouragement from supportive professors and peers, he rebuilt his confidence and became actively involved on campus through the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, computer science club, and the MESA program. Now preparing to transfer to study electrical and computer engineering, Gorges’ story highlights personal growth, perseverance, and the impact of community support.

Joseph Johnson returned to college in his mid-30s after years of self-doubt shaped by learning disabilities and past academic struggles. After working various jobs, a chronic health condition made him rethink school. With the help of MiraCosta’s student support programs and faculty guidance, he found both stability and a renewed sense of purpose. With a broadened perspective and renewed sense of purpose, Johnson ultimately decided to change his career path to pursue political science, intending to do his part to make a difference in the world. Johnson’s journey reflects resilience, determination, and a commitment to making a meaningful impact in his community.

Tyler Karg came to MiraCosta after earning a bachelor’s degree in public health from San Diego State University, seeking a more hands-on, patient-centered career in healthcare. Enrolling in the college’s nursing programs, he found a supportive learning environment that helped him overcome challenges like test anxiety while building strong connections with faculty and peers. As he continues his path toward becoming a registered nurse, Karg’s story demonstrates dedication, adaptability, and a passion for serving others.

Ricky Toxtle turned an unexpected injury into an opportunity for growth, enrolling at MiraCosta to reset both academically and athletically. As a first-generation college student and part of the men’s soccer team, he thrived in and out of the classroom at MiraCosta. Now preparing to pursue a career in psychology, Toxtle’s story highlights resilience, purpose, and the value of community.

Kristy Yam began her academic career at MiraCosta in 2022, while balancing family responsibilities with two children and overcoming self-doubt to excel academically. With the support of campus resources and faculty, she rediscovered her confidence in the classroom. She is graduating with an associate degree in communication and was inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, Alpha Chi Lambda chapter. Yam’s journey reflects the power of embracing support and rediscovering confidence.

Each recipient will receive a medal to wear at commencement, and their achievements will be highlighted in the Commencement Program. In addition, their MiraCosta College transcripts will include a special notation to acknowledge this honor.

MiraCosta congratulates these distinguished students on their accomplishments and wishes them continued success in their future endeavors.
