Meet Ricky Toxtle

For as long as he can remember, MiraCosta College student Ricky Toxtle’s life revolved around soccer.

Growing up in Carlsbad with three siblings, his days were filled with practices and games, with weekends spent on the field. The rhythm was steady, and by the time he reached high school, his path felt clear: graduate and continue playing at a four-year university.

But early in his senior year, that plan came to a halt.

A torn meniscus sidelined Toxtle for the entire season, forcing him off the field and away from the routine that had shaped his life. The injury didn’t just interrupt his athletic goals. It threw off his entire drive.

“It kept me out my whole senior year,” he said. “It got me into some bad habits.”

For a while, things felt uncertain. But instead of letting that setback define him, Toxtle made a decision that would ultimately reset his path: he enrolled at MiraCosta College.

As a first-generation college student, the choice was both practical and intentional. With an older brother already in college, Toxtle wanted to ease the burden on his family while still pursuing his education and possibly returning to the sport he loved.

“I wanted to save money and not put that financial pressure on my parents,” he said. “And I also had a chance to be on the soccer team, so I thought I should go for it.”

At MiraCosta College, Toxtle found more than a second chance at soccer — he found structure, support, and a renewed sense of purpose. Back on the field, he reconnected with the game that has always grounded him. Off the field, he began to grow in a way he hadn’t expected.

“Being on the team made it way better,” he said. “I’ve made so many more friends. I’m not the most outgoing person, so it really helped me feel part of the college.”

That sense of belonging extended into the classroom. Toxtle credits MiraCosta’s faculty with helping him navigate academic challenges and stay on track.

“All the teachers I’ve had have been really helpful,” he said. “They’re really good at what they do, and they’re reliable. It makes it easier to get through the hard times when you’re struggling.”

One professor, in particular, made a lasting impact.

Toxtle didn’t always feel confident in his writing, until his English professor, Tyrone, saw something in him that he hadn’t seen in himself.

“He would look at my work and say, ‘You’re a really good writer, just have more confidence,’” Toxtle recalled. “That really stuck with me.”

That encouragement helped Toxtle begin to see his own potential more clearly, not just in the classroom, but in his broader life goals.

Now majoring in psychology, he’s focused on building a future where he can support others, potentially in counseling or sports psychology — a path shaped, in part, by his own experiences navigating injury, setbacks, and resilience.

His hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Toxtle was awarded MiraCosta’s Medal of Academic Merit — an honor that caught him completely off guard.

“I was really shocked,” he said. “But also proud of myself for putting in all that work to get good grades.”

Now, Toxtle is preparing for the next step in his journey, as he waits to hear back from the universities he applied to. Wherever he lands, his goal is clear: earn his degree while minimizing debt and continuing to build toward a meaningful career.

Looking back, Toxtle sees MiraCosta College as the place that helped simplify what once felt overwhelming.

“It just made the whole college process easier,” he said.

After overcoming such an unexpected setback, that clarity and confidence mean everything to him.

Toxtle’s story is a reminder that sometimes the path forward isn’t the one you planned, but with the right support and mindset, it can still take you exactly where you’re meant to go.
