At MiraCosta College, this role has been filled with heart and vision by Superintendent/President Dr. Sunny Cooke. Today, we are proud to announce that Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) has awarded Dr. Cooke the 2026 Michael Bennett Lifetime Achievement Award.

This prestigious honor, given to retiring college presidents, acknowledges a career defined by a simple yet powerful belief: that every student, with the right mentorship, can achieve extraordinary things.

Like the great guides in our favorite tales, Dr. Sunny Cooke understood that a college is more than its buildings. A college is the dream and vision of the people inside it. Throughout a successful career, Dr. Cooke has championed PTK's values, creating a culture where student leaders don't just graduate; they thrive. Dr. Cooke’s “nomination is a testament to the deep gratitude felt by students, ot just for the support given today, but for the legacy of excellence left for generations to come,” explains Lynn Tincher-Ladner, president and CEO of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

The Michael Bennett Lifetime Achievement Award is more than a trophy; it is a "thank you" from the past, present, and future students whose lives were changed by Dr. Cooke’s dedication. As Dr. Cooke prepares to step into a new adventure in 2026, MiraCosta College remains stronger, kinder, and infinitely more ambitious because of this leadership.

Phi Theta Kappa is the premier honor society recognizing the academic achievements of students at associate degree-granting colleges. The Michael Bennett Award is the highest honor PTK bestows upon retiring presidents who have demonstrated an enduring commitment to student success and institutional excellence.
