President/Superintendent Dr. Sunita “Sunny” Cooke has been named a CEO of the Year honoree in the Public Service (Education) category by the San Diego Business Journal. The recognition highlights Dr. Cooke’s exceptional leadership, regional impact, and unwavering commitment to expanding opportunity through higher education.
“I was not expecting this honor, and I am deeply grateful. The work we do at MiraCosta College is centered on transforming lives and strengthening our communities, and this recognition reinforces the impact of that mission. I extend my sincere thanks to my bosses, the seven elected members of our Board of Trustees, as well as our dedicated faculty, classified professionals, administrators, and community leaders who make this work possible every day,” explains Cooke.
Dr. Cooke, who has led MiraCosta College since 2015, is widely recognized for her visionary, student-centered leadership. Over the course of her tenure, she has advanced initiatives that strengthen workforce pathways, improve student outcomes, and align education with regional economic needs. Her leadership has helped position MiraCosta College as a national model for student success and innovation.
Under Dr. Cooke’s guidance, MiraCosta College launched California’s first biomanufacturing bachelor’s degree program at a community college, creating a direct, affordable pathway into the region’s growing life sciences sector. She also oversaw the successful implementation of the college’s $455 million Measure MM bond program, modernizing campus facilities and earning consistent A+ ratings for transparency and fiscal accountability.
During her tenure, MiraCosta College has significantly improved graduation and transfer rates while working to close equity gaps for historically underserved students. The college has earned national recognition as an Achieving the Dream Leader College and was recently named a semifinalist for the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, further affirming its leadership in delivering meaningful student outcomes.
Beyond campus, Dr. Cooke plays a vital role in regional and national efforts to advance workforce development and economic mobility. She has served in leadership roles with organizations such as the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation and the American Association of Community Colleges, helping shape policies and partnerships that connect education to opportunity.
