More than 300 students, alumni, faculty, staff, trustees, donors, and community leaders gathered on June 13 at MiraCosta College's Oceanside Campus to celebrate the extraordinary career and lasting impact of retiring Superintendent/President Dr. Sunita "Sunny" Cooke.
Held in the center of Oceanside Campus, A Coastal Celebration honored Dr. Cooke's nearly 40 years of service in higher education, including 11 years leading MiraCosta College. The event also focused on the future through support of the
Sunny Futures Fund, a permanent fund established to honor Dr. Cooke's commitment to expanding educational opportunity and helping students achieve their dreams.
“I came to this country as a little girl from an immigrant family, arriving with very little in terms of material resources and with English as my third language,” said Dr. Cooke. “Thanks to public education, financial aid, and people who believed in me, I was able to earn my degrees and spend nearly 40 years in higher education. That journey is why I believe so deeply in the power of community colleges. We welcome everyone who seeks an education, meet students where they are, and help them achieve their academic, personal, and professional goals. Our shared purpose is to ensure that a student’s ZIP code, the color of their skin, their gender identity, their family’s income, or the number of books in their home does not determine whether they will be successful in college.”
Friends and colleagues from across higher education also shared reflections on Dr. Cooke's leadership and influence, including Dr. DeRionne Pollard, president and CEO of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC); Dr. Constance Carroll, chancellor emerita of the San Diego Community College District and president and CEO of the California Community College Baccalaureate Association; Dr. Cindy Miles, chancellor emerita of the Grossmont Cuyamaca Community College District; and Dr. David Broad, former MiraCosta College trustee who helped welcome Dr. Cooke to the college more than a decade ago.
“Dr. Cooke’s name will be forever woven into the story of MiraCosta College,” said Dr. Carroll. "Her vision, leadership, and unwavering commitment to students helped transform this institution and position it for the future. The relationships she built and the countless lives she touched have left this college stronger, more innovative, and more student-centered for decades to come.”
Representing the student perspective, Diego Padilla, president of MiraCosta College's Associated Student Government, reflected on Dr. Cooke's impact on generations of students.
“Like many of my peers at MiraCosta, I had a non-traditional path as a U.S. Navy veteran who came back to college,” said Diego. “From the moment I met her on the way to English class, Dr. Cooke made time to walk with me, ask about my goals, and check in on how I was really doing. That’s the same attention and care she’s shown to all students. She doesn’t just lead from an office; she leads with real presence, making sure students feel seen.”
Under Dr. Cooke's leadership, MiraCosta expanded workforce education and career pathways, strengthened partnerships with employers and community organizations, enhanced student support services, and completed transformative campus projects, including the Learning Commons, Chemistry and Biotechnology Building, and Media Arts Complex. Her leadership helped position the college to meet students' evolving needs while strengthening its role as an economic and educational driver for North San Diego County.
“The future of our industry depends on a strong and diverse workforce pipeline, and Dr. Cooke recognized that long before many others,” said Clarence Flowers, Employee Engagement Manager at Genentech. “By fostering partnerships between MiraCosta College and employers, she helped create pathways that connect students to meaningful careers while addressing critical workforce needs. Her leadership has had a lasting impact not only on students, but on the broader life sciences ecosystem in our region.”
Speaking on behalf of the college's current executive leadership team, Assistant Superintendent/Vice President of Student Services Alketa Wojcik shared heartfelt reflections on Dr. Cooke's transformative approach to institutional growth.
“Sunny came to this college with a vision, and she did not flinch from it,” said Wojcik. “She challenged systems, built new ones, and asked the questions nobody else was ready to ask yet, because she was already thinking about where we needed to be ten years from now. She didn't manage the present. She designed the future. And because of her, we are ready for it.”
Another highlight was the announcement that the main roadway leading to the college's Biotechnology Facility will be renamed Cooke Court in recognition of Dr. Cooke's leadership and contributions to the institution.
The celebration concluded with a fund-the-need event benefiting the Sunny Futures Fund, inviting attendees to continue Dr. Cooke's legacy by investing in the next generation of students. Guests also participated in opportunity drawings and special fundraising activities, including a donation from Southwest Airlines of four round-trip tickets to any destination served by the airline.
By the end of the evening, almost $500,000 had been raised to support future MiraCosta students.
