MiraCosta College has completed the activation of new solar installations across multiple district locations, marking a significant milestone in the College’s ongoing sustainability and infrastructure efforts.

The solar initiative is designed to reduce utility costs, lower greenhouse-gas emissions, and support reliable, long-term campus operations. The projects were funded through MiraCosta College’s capital improvement program, supported by Measure MM and additional district resources, and are part of broader infrastructure upgrades across the district.

“These investments help the district manage long-term operating costs while strengthening our campus infrastructure,” said Elba Gomez, Vice President of Administrative Services. “On-site solar generation allows MiraCosta College to better control energy expenses, reduce reliance on the power grid, and reinvest savings into our core mission of serving students and the community.”

MiraCosta College serves as a vital resource for North San Diego County, providing affordable, high-quality education and career training for local students, working adults, and military veterans. Each year, the College prepares students for in-demand careers that strengthen the regional economy, including nursing and healthcare, biotechnology, skilled trades, and other workforce-aligned fields.

As enrollment pressures increase across higher education, community colleges play a critical role in providing accessible pathways to college and careers. Investments in infrastructure, such as energy efficiency and renewable power, help ensure campuses remain operationally sustainable while supporting hands-on learning environments and essential student services.

Once fully operational, the combined solar installations are expected to generate approximately 5,141 megawatt-hours of electricity annually, comparable to the yearly energy use of about 464 homes. The systems are projected to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions by an estimated 3,450 metric tons each year, advancing the district’s environmental stewardship goals.

Solar Installations by Location:

  • Oceanside Campus: A large solar carport system has been completed, expanding renewable energy capacity while providing shaded parking.
  • San Elijo Campus: A 371-kilowatt carport-style solar array is being installed in the western parking lot to support campus sustainability objectives.
  • Community Learning Center (CLC): A $1.9 million solar array with covered parking over the Student Services Building is nearing completion and commissioning.

Several MiraCosta College facilities were built before 1970, and while Measure MM supported significant modernization and new construction, ongoing infrastructure needs persist. Projects such as the solar initiative help address long-term operational challenges by improving efficiency and reducing costs, while complementing broader efforts to maintain and upgrade aging systems across the district.

Project Partners:
