MiraCosta College proudly celebrates student performer Olivia Montgomery, who will sing the National Anthem at Opening Night with the San Diego Clippers on Friday, November 14, at the Frontwave Arena in Oceanside. A theater major with a passion for the arts, Montgomery’s selection for this high-profile event marks a milestone in her academic and artistic journey.
Montgomery, who has been immersed in music and performance since childhood, credits MiraCosta’s theater and dance programs for helping her grow as both an artist and a person. “They have amazing classes and faculty who really want to teach,” she shared. “I’ve taken dance, acting, and stagecraft courses that pushed me to explore every facet of the arts.”
Her opportunity to perform at the SD Clippers game came through a recommendation from a fellow student and friend who recognized Montgomery’s talent and dedication. “To have someone think enough of me to recommend me for something this incredible is so big for me,” Montgomery said.
As she prepares for the performance, Montgomery is working with her longtime voice teacher and practicing daily to ensure she brings both technical precision and heartfelt emotion to the anthem. “I want to convey a lot of heart, especially with everything going on in the world right now. I hope people feel my passion for the arts.”
Montgomery’s time at MiraCosta has been marked by academic excellence, artistic achievement, and personal growth. She’s proud of earning top grades while performing in productions like The Play That Goes Wrong and participating in the college’s dance concerts.
A key moment in her journey was receiving the Theater Department Merit Scholarship, which is awarded to students who demonstrate exceptional talent and a commitment to the performing arts. “It was a huge honor,” Montgomery said. “The scholarship recognized not just my acting, but also my involvement in technical work and my dedication to the department.” The award helped cover essential costs, such as sheet music, printed scripts, and transportation expenses, which are often overlooked but are vital to a student’s success. “It made a real difference,” she added. “Knowing that the department believed in me enough to invest in my growth was incredibly validating.”
Montgomery also credits MiraCosta’s support services, including tutoring, counseling, and the transfer center, for helping her navigate her academic path. She’s now preparing to transfer to a four-year university in the spring, a step she feels ready for thanks to the foundation MiraCosta provided. “I’ve learned to advocate for myself, stay calm under pressure, and build a strong foundation for my future.”
When asked what drives her, Montgomery’s answer was simple and heartfelt: “My parents. They’ve always supported me, and I want to show them that all the love they gave me shines on stage.”
Montgomery’s story is a testament to the transformative power of education, community, and the arts. Her performance at Frontwave Arena will not only kick off the SD Clippers’ season, it will also spotlight the talent and spirit of MiraCosta College.
