Global Health Delegation Makes an Impact
On Wednesday, November 13, an inaugural delegation of students from MiraCosta College’s Global Health Program participated in the Quarterly Conversations in Global Health (QCGH) Seminar at UC San Diego. This prestigious event highlights critical issues in global health, featuring presentations from faculty and professionals at the forefront of research, policy, and practice.
The Fall 2024 seminar focused on Asylum Seeker Health at the California/Mexico Border, with insights from a distinguished panel:
- Meghan Zavala, policy analyst at the binational nonprofit Al Otro Lado
- Dr. Kathleen Fischer, Assistant Clinical Professor and Medical Director of the Asylum Seekers Medical Screening and Stabilization Program
- Dr. Brenda K. Wilson, Assistant Professor of Ethnic Studies and Global Health
The panel explored the profound challenges faced by asylum seekers and shared actionable ways for students and community members to support this vulnerable population. MiraCosta students were inspired by the panelists' commitment and learned how they can contribute to meaningful change in this field.
The Global Health Program at MiraCosta College, directed by Dr. Alexis Tucker Sade, MPH, launched in Fall 2024 in partnership with UC San Diego’s Global Health Program. Housed within the Anthropology Department, this interdisciplinary program provides students with the opportunity to integrate their studies with a focus on health equity, addressing disparities worldwide. From analyzing high rates of maternal and infant mortality in Africa and South Asia to understanding the impacts of intergenerational trauma on Native American communities, students in the program are equipped to tackle some of humanity’s most complex challenges.
The program is open to students from diverse fields of study and career paths who are eager to make a difference in global health. To learn more, visit miracosta.edu/globalhealth or contact Dr. Tucker Sade at atuckersade@miracosta.edu.
