03/6/2024

MiraCosta College is thrilled to announce the double honor awarded to Gabriel Bartoli, an exceptional international student named a 2024 New Century Transfer Pathway Scholar and a 2024 All-USA Academic Team member. Bartoli’s remarkable achievements have earned him national recognition in two highly competitive and prestigious scholarship programs.

Bartoli received the highest score in California in the All-USA Academic Team competition, which had over 2,200 applications this year. This accomplishment designates him as the state's New Century Transfer Pathway Scholar, providing him with a $2,250 scholarship. The New Century Program is sponsored by The Coca-Cola Foundation, the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, Phi Theta Kappa, and the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC).

In addition to this accomplishment, Bartoli has been selected as one of just 20 students nationwide for the 2024 All-USA Academic Team, recognizing his outstanding intellectual achievement, leadership, and community and campus engagement. This honor is sponsored by Cengage, with additional support from the AACC and Phi Theta Kappa.

As a member of the All-USA Academic Team, Bartoli will receive a $5,000 scholarship, a special medallion, and recognition in various media outlets. The awards will be formally presented at Phi Theta Kappa’s Presidents Breakfast during the AACC Convention, scheduled for Monday, April 8, 2024, at 7:00 AM in Louisville, Kentucky.

Dr. Lynn Tincher-Ladner, President and CEO of Phi Theta Kappa, lauded Bartoli’s accomplishments: “We congratulate Gabriel for receiving these prestigious scholarships, and we are honored to recognize such outstanding achievements. Scholarships like these are essential for enabling community college students to achieve success and make college completion a tangible goal.”

Bartoli’s story is one of extraordinary determination and community connection. After reactivating MiraCosta College’s International Club, he successfully led 19 events in the 2022-2023 school year, including a widely attended Halloween party and presentations celebrating international cultures.

Overcoming significant personal and academic challenges, Bartoli has excelled academically and become a mentor and role model for his peers. His commitment to sustainability and his mentorship under Geography Professor Taya Lazootin have paved the way for his continued pursuit of education in Sustainability Studies at MiraCosta College.

Bartoli embodies the spirit of MiraCosta College through his dedication to learning, community building, and advocacy for sustainable business practices. He inspires all students, encouraging them to seize new opportunities and value the lessons learned through diverse experiences.
