From MiraCosta to Statewide Leadership

MiraCosta College student Ian Vargas Polo is taking student advocacy from the campus level to the statewide stage.

Governor Gavin Newsom has appointed Vargas Polo, an Oceanside resident and second-year MiraCosta College student, to the California Community Colleges Board of Governors, the 17-member board that sets policy and provides guidance for California’s 73 community college districts and 116 colleges.

The appointment was announced on September 18.

“This appointment is an opportunity to bring the experiences of community college students directly into statewide conversations and to make sure students know their perspectives matter,” Vargas Polo said. “I want to use this role to listen, learn, and help create opportunities for students to see themselves as part of the decisions that shape their education.”

The California Community Colleges comprise the nation’s largest system of higher education, serving approximately 2.2 million students.

“Ian’s appointment is a powerful example of what can happen when students recognize the value of their voice and step forward to serve,” said MiraCosta College Superintendent/President Lennor M. Johnson. “He brings curiosity, determination, and a genuine commitment to representing students. We are incredibly proud to see a MiraCosta student contributing to conversations that will help shape the future of community colleges across California.”

Vargas Polo’s path into student leadership began during his first year at MiraCosta, when he joined the Associated Student Government and served as a senator representing the San Elijo Campus. He later became active with the Student Senate for California Community Colleges, serving as Regional Affairs Director for Region X, vice chair, and communications officer. He also serves as the student representative on MiraCosta College’s Independent Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee.

As a member of the Board of Governors, Vargas Polo hopes to elevate issues, including financial literacy and student representation.

Vargas Polo began taking MiraCosta courses while still in high school and is now pursuing a degree in business administration. His interests include accounting, finance, investigation, and public service.

He credits his mother, MiraCosta College alumna Monica Polo, with instilling the discipline, consistency, and confidence that have guided his education and leadership.

“I absolutely love my mom. She's been my rock throughout the entire time,” he said.

After MiraCosta, Vargas Polo plans to transfer to a four-year university, with UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business among his goals. He is considering a career as a Certified Fraud Examiner, opportunities in government and public service, and, someday, teaching.

For Vargas Polo, the appointment is not only a milestone. It is an opportunity to help other students recognize the value of their own voices and their ability to shape the institutions that serve them.
