A ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned to mark the opening of the new Kinesiology, Health, and Nutrition (KHAN) Building and Gymnasium Complex at the Oceanside campus. The 40,415 square feet complex replaced the existing gym buildings (5000, 5100, and 5200) to create a consolidated location for a new gymnasium, athletics instruction spaces, and the Wellness Center.

The $41.3 million complex includes locker rooms, equipment storage, and a multi-purpose studio. It is part of the Health and Wellness Academic Hub on campus and is part of a design-build procurement that includes the new Allied Health Building and Parking Lot-5A.

“We are so pleased to provide our students with a world-class facility critical to advancing MiraCosta’s Kinesiology, Health, and Nutrition programs, which support some of the in-demand careers,” explains Tim Flood, MiraCosta College’s Assistant Superintendent/Vice President of Administrative Services.“This complex provides a thoughtful, modern, and well-equipped teaching and learning environment our students and faculty deserve.”

The ribbon-cutting is scheduled for Monday, February 12, at 10:00 a.m. at MiraCosta College, 1 Barnard Drive, Oceanside. The event is open to the public. Please park in Lot-5A and head to the north end of the lot.

The new facility includes several unique design features:

For evening events at the gymnasium, the architectural ‘billboard’ feature becomes more prominent as the lit volume of the gym interior becomes a lantern at the southern gateway to the hub and the landmark for the new Health and Wellness Hub.
Located in the heart of the hub, the new Kinesiology Health and Nutrition (KHAN) building is equipped with ellipticals, treadmills, and other kinesis equipment. Combined with specialized classrooms outfitted for nutrition studies, the KHAN building will enable students to study and analyze the effects of physical training and dietary nutrition on the human body.
Within the Wellness Center, large glass door “walls” allow for indoor/outdoor connections from all the main spaces; the Fitness Center studios also have roll-up operable walls to open up to the exterior when weather conditions are favorable, and instructional programs benefit from this flexibility.

The project also includes several features with environmental sustainability in mind:
Extensive use of natural light, which research has shown to improve student well-being and productivity
High-efficiency fixtures are used throughout
Exterior and interior finishes feature eco-friendly materials
Landscaping includes low-water and native species

HMC Architects and Balfour Beatty Construction served as the Design/Build team for the project. It is part of the Oceanside campus’ new Health and Wellness Academic Hub and will also include the new Teresia M. Heyden Hall for Nursing & Allied Health, scheduled to be completed later this year.

The facilities were funded through MiraCosta’s capital improvement program using funds from Measure MM.

“We are grateful to our local voters for supporting Measure MM, which has made the transformation of our campuses possible,” Flood added. “It’s been an investment in the future of education in North County and our local workforce.”
