MiraCosta College Passes Juneteenth Resolution

Last night, the MiraCosta College Board of Trustees unanimously passed resolution 20-21/22, officially recognizing the nineteenth day of June as Juneteenth, a national holiday also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, and Emancipation Day.

WHEREAS, chattel slavery was not officially abolished until the ratification of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States in December 1865;

WHEREAS, Juneteenth is officially recognized as the day when enslaved African peoples in Galveston, Texas, learned of the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation that had been issued by President Lincoln more than two years earlier; and

WHEREAS, the MiraCosta Community College Board of Trustees recognizes the significance of Juneteenth as an essential time to celebrate the significant contributions, accomplishments, inventions, triumphs, and resiliency of Black/African Americans to the history and development of the United States;

WHEREAS, observing Juneteenth, and other days of cultural remembrance, is a step towards acknowledging our commitments and actions to advance equity, justice, and accountability;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the MiraCosta College Board of Trustees recognizes the historical significance of Juneteenth and supports the celebration of Juneteenth and opportunities for the MiraCosta College community to learn about and better understand the history, unique lived experience, plight, and persistence of Black/African American peoples; and recognizes that the observance of the end of chattel slavery as part of the history and heritage of the United States of America.
