Black Alliance Invites MiraCosta To Honor Juneteenth

06/17/2026
Description

As we approach Juneteenth, the Black Alliance at MiraCosta invites you to join us in honoring this important day in our nation's history, a day of remembrance, celebration, reflection, and community.

Observed annually on June 19, Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce that enslaved Black Americans were free, more than two years after the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation. Often referred to as Freedom Day, Juneteenth honors the triumph of emancipation and serves as a powerful reminder of the perseverance, contributions, and ongoing pursuit of equity within Black communities. In 2021, Juneteenth became a federal holiday, affirming its place as an essential part of American history.

As the Black Alliance, we are proud to recognize Juneteenth and the profound legacy it represents. Our employee resource group is committed to fostering meaningful connections, advocacy, and support for Black employees and allies while helping to create a campus community where all individuals feel valued, respected, and empowered to thrive.

The spirit of Juneteenth is deeply connected to this work. While the holiday commemorates the emancipation of enslaved Black Americans in Texas on June 19, 1865, it also invites us to celebrate the progress made through generations of courage, perseverance, and collective action. It is a time to honor the rich contributions of Black Americans to our nation and our communities, to reflect on the importance of equity and inclusion, and to recommit ourselves to building a future where opportunity and belonging are accessible to all.

As we gather to observe Juneteenth, we hope our campus community will join us in embracing both the joy and the significance of this occasion, learning from our shared history, uplifting Black voices and experiences, and strengthening the relationships that make MiraCosta a more compassionate, inclusive, and vibrant place for everyone.

There are many meaningful ways to honor Juneteenth:
  • Give to the MiraCosta Umoja Student Success Fund to support programs, resources, and opportunities that empower students and/or volunteer or donate to organizations working to advance educational opportunity, social justice, and community well-being.
  • Learn and reflect by exploring the history of slavery, emancipation, Reconstruction, and the ongoing pursuit of civil rights. Check out MiraCosta’s Library webpage of recommended databases for Black Studies
  • Support Black-owned businesses, artists, authors, and organizations within our local community.
  • Attend a Juneteenth or community event that celebrates Black culture, history, and achievement. The North San Diego County NAACP Juneteenth Celebration takes place locally this weekend!
  • Engage in conversations about racial equity, belonging, and the role each of us can play in creating inclusive environments.
  • Amplify Black stories and perspectives through literature, film, podcasts, and other educational resources.
Thank you for joining us in celebrating Juneteenth and in helping to foster a campus community grounded in belonging, compassion, and mutual respect.

In solidarity and celebration,
