A historic season just elevated itself, and now it demands attention.
MiraCosta Women’s Basketball continues its postseason run after a commanding 87–63 win over Palomar in Round 2 of the 3C2A State Playoffs. The Spartans move on to Round 3 and will host Los Angeles Trade-Technical College on Saturday, March 7, at 7 p.m. on the Oceanside Campus (1 Barnard Drive).
From the opening minutes against Palomar, MiraCosta dictated the game. Defensive pressure disrupted the opponent's rhythm. Rebounding limited second chances. Unselfish ball movement created high-percentage looks. The Spartans built separation and never let it slip.
That has been the standard all year.
The team finished the regular season 27–1 overall and 11–1 in conference play, capturing the PCAC championship for the first time since 2020 and rising to No. 5 in the state rankings, the highest in program history. They average more than 80 points per game, generate nearly 20 steals per contest, and have defeated 15 teams with records of .500 or better.
“We don’t chase rankings. We chase habits. Our defense travels. Our effort travels. When you commit to that every day, results follow,” Perryman said.
Just one year ago, the program finished 8–17. The turnaround has been cultural and intentional.
“We made a decision to raise the standard. No shortcuts. No excuses. This group embraced that. They compete with pride, and they take ownership of the name on their jersey,” Perryman added.
Saturday’s playoff performance reflected that identity.
“In the postseason, toughness shows up. I loved how we responded to every run. We stayed composed. We trusted each other. That’s championship behavior,” he said.
Athletic Director Patrick Conahan sees the impact extending well beyond the court.
“What the women’s basketball team has accomplished thus far is near perfection. It is an incredibly special accomplishment that is much harder to do than they made it look,” Conahan said. “Coach Perryman has done a tremendous job. He selected the right assistant coaches, recruited a wonderful group of student athletes, and executed the vision he had for this group.”
For Conahan, the impact reaches beyond the scoreboard.
“What the MiraCosta women’s basketball team has done strengthens the standard for excellence in our department. It’s inspiring and something that the whole College should be very proud of,” he added.
Inside the locker room, the players understand what this moment represents.
“We’ve built this all season,” said
Anayla Anderson, point guard. “The work, the sacrifice, the accountability. It all adds up. We play for each other and for something bigger than ourselves. Hosting this game at home is an honor. We want the gym loud. We want our campus with us. We’re ready to show what Spartan basketball stands for.”
The journey continues on Saturday.
Tickets are available now. General admission is $13. Faculty, staff, students, seniors, military, and children 12 and under are $9 with proof required where applicable.
With a deeper postseason run on the line, the Spartans return home carrying momentum, belief, and the weight of a season that has already redefined the program.
Now they ask the campus community to meet the moment.
Fill the gym. Bring the energy that fuels championship basketball.
This team has earned the stage. Saturday night, they defend it at home.
