MiraCosta College’s comprehensive capital improvement program continues to reshape its campuses, delivering state-of-the-art facilities, sustainable energy solutions, and welcoming student spaces to North San Diego County.

Funded through the $455 million Measure MM bond and additional district resources, the program has already completed 30 projects, with three more underway and four in the design phase. To date, more than $393 million of the $460 million committed program budget has been expended.

Capital improvements include three major solar projects underway or nearing completion.

“MiraCosta College is going green to save green, harnessing the sun to power the future,” said Elba Gomez, Vice President of Administrative Services. “These projects will cut utility costs, promote sustainability, and help create greener campus environments for our students.”
- Oceanside Campus – A $19.7 million solar carport system is being installed in campus parking lots 5A and 4C, with completion expected this fall
- San Elijo Campus – A $3.8 million solar project is adding covered parking structures with panels, scheduled to go online later this year.
- Community Learning Center – A $1.9 million solar array project, also with covered parking, was completed ahead of schedule and is currently being commissioned by the utility.
Together, the three projects will generate 4,315 megawatt hours of renewable energy each year, enough to power about 750 homes, and avoid an estimated 2,176 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions.

While solar leads the way, additional projects at the Oceanside campus are reshaping MiraCosta’s classroom environments and learning spaces.

A major $69.3 million renovation project is currently underway at Oceanside’s 3000 series buildings and is expected to be completed by next spring. The project includes replacing four aging buildings with a new single-story facility that will house classrooms, offices, and collaborative spaces. In addition, the 3400 and 3700 buildings will undergo significant renovations. Once finished, the area will feature the new Social Justice & Equity Center, Social Sciences Hub, and Student Life & Leadership Center. The existing Student Center will also receive updates as part of the project.

Three additional projects are in the design phase:
Biology/Physical Sciences/Design (Building 4500 Renovation): The $35.5 million modernization project will consist of major renovations to the existing building systems and provide new, updated labs and teaching spaces for the Biology, Physical Science, and Design programs. The project is being led by Balfour Beatty and HMC architects as part of a design-build partnership. Construction is expected to start next spring.
Professional Development (Building 4700): The project involves the renovation of the 3,000-square-foot Career Services building into a new Teaching & Learning Center and Online Education hub. The $3.7 million project, led by Align Builders and SGPA Architecture, is expected to start construction next summer.
Wayfinding and Signage: A $4.3 million project to unify pedestrian and vehicular signage is in design with DLR architects. Construction is planned for next summer as well.
Measure MM, a $455 million bond approved by voters in 2016, provides several key improvements, including upgrades to career training facilities for science, health care, technology, and the skilled trades.
