MiraCosta College’s men’s basketball team is making an impact with its unconventional roster and strong defensive presence. The team features 28-year-old Navy veteran Ramel Bethea, who leads all California Community College players in blocked shots, and 26-year-old former University of Florida forward Isaiah Stokes, adding experience and size to the lineup.
Coach Rob Robinson emphasizes the team’s physicality, noting that while they dominate inside, they face challenges against guard-heavy opponents. Despite this, the Spartans have built a strong record with contributions from DeVaughn McCrumb, Benji Hilstock, and John Hapgood, who provide key playmaking and outside shooting.
Bethea, who hadn’t played basketball before joining the Navy, has developed into a Division I prospect, attracting interest from Texas A&M, Boston College, and Fresno State. His defensive skills and athleticism have made him a standout player, with Robinson predicting he could be the Defensive Player of the Year in California.
