MiraCosta College is proud to announce its selection as one of the new Industrial Assessment Centers (IAC) by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) as part of a groundbreaking initiative fueled by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. This prestigious recognition positions the MiraCosta College’s Technology Career Institute (TCI) at the forefront of energy innovation and workforce development.

Supported by a grant of $2.1 million, the IAC project transforms MiraCosta College’s TCI location into the latest San Diego Industrial Assessment Center. This initiative will pioneer accelerated workforce training and develop a curriculum that utilizes cutting-edge technology focused on renewable trade programs. MiraCosta's approach is tailored to address the regional workforce demand, offering practical training that equips graduates with the skills and knowledge necessary for energy efficiency, equipment, and standards. Importantly, the funding enables the Technology Career Institute to provide these programs at a reduced cost, supplemented with comprehensive support services. This approach aims to foster a more diverse and gender-equitable workforce.

The project includes the establishment of 10 renewable energy startup accelerators at TCI, with profit-sharing contracts designed to ensure the sustainability of this innovative workforce training model.

MiraCosta College President/Superintendent Dr. Sunita “Sunny” Cooke explains, "This grant is not just a recognition of MiraCosta College's dedication to educational excellence and sustainability but also a catalyst for us to significantly contribute to the clean energy sector. We are honored to receive this grant and are eager to train a skilled workforce ready to meet the challenges of tomorrow’s clean energy economy."

A significant portion of this funding, over 75%, is earmarked for organizations that are instrumental in serving disadvantaged communities. This strategic allocation aims to alleviate energy burdens while simultaneously creating accessible, high-quality job opportunities for Americans, especially those overcoming employment barriers.

MiraCosta College's inclusion in this elite group of IAC selectees is a testament to its commitment to sustainability and workforce development. The IAC Program, with a legacy spanning over four decades, has contributed over 20,000 assessments across the nation's manufacturing base. The new IACs, encompassing community colleges, trade schools, and union training programs, are set to revolutionize the pathway to environmentally sustainable jobs in America.

Congressmember Mike Levin expressed his excitement about this development: “I'm thrilled to see MiraCosta College selected by the Department of Energy as a new center for Clean Energy Workforce Training,” said Rep. Mike Levin. “Thanks to President Biden's Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which I helped pass, MiraCosta will receive funding to train the next generation of the clean energy workforce for in-demand, high-quality jobs here at home, all while improving building and manufacturing efficiency and reducing our emissions. I’m committed to ushering in America’s clean energy future, and I’m grateful that MiraCosta will help lead that transition.”

This grant recognizes MiraCosta College's excellence in educational innovation and empowers the institution to play a crucial role in shaping the future of clean energy and manufacturing sectors. The College is set to train over 3,000 students and incumbent manufacturing workers, offering quality career paths that do not necessitate a four-year college degree.

MiraCosta College expresses its profound gratitude for this opportunity and is committed to leveraging this grant to significantly improve energy efficiency and workforce training. The District looks forward to pioneering a sustainable future and nurturing the next generation of clean energy professionals.
