MiraCosta College stands proudly at the forefront of sustainability, earning recognition at the state and local levels. The California Community Colleges Board of Governors has awarded MiraCosta College the 2023 Energy and Sustainability Award (for a middle sized college), a testament to the District’s dedication to combating climate change in alignment with the Vision 2030 strategic plan. Simultaneously, MiraCosta College was honored as the Olivenhain Municipal Water District's (OMWD) Customer of the Year, acknowledging our significant contributions to sustainable water management.
The Board of Governors Energy and Sustainability Awards, established in 2012, acknowledges leaders and exemplary efforts in energy and sustainability within the California Community Colleges. The 2023 awards, presented at the November Board of Governors meeting, hold particular importance under Vision 2030's directive for community colleges to pioneer climate action in workforce development and daily operations.

MiraCosta College was recognized for its exceptional sustainability initiatives, notably the 5-year Capital Construction Plan that embeds sustainability as a core institutional value. A key project includes the installation of new solar photovoltaic canopies at its campuses, projected to offset 80% of the District’s electricity use. This strategic approach underlines the District’s dedication to integrating sustainable practices into its infrastructure and operational philosophy.

Furthermore, MiraCosta College has been honored as the Olivenhain Municipal Water District's Customer of the Year. This accolade comes in recognition of the District’s significant investments in incorporating recycled water into its San Elijo campus, conserving over 2.8 million gallons of imported drinking water annually. The District’s ongoing partnership with OMWD also enhances community awareness and education about water use efficiency, emphasizing its commitment to environmental stewardship.

In light of these achievements, Tim Flood, assistant superintendent and vice president of business services at MiraCosta College, expressed his thoughts: "At MiraCosta College, sustainability isn't just a practice; it's a principle that guides our every decision. Receiving these prestigious awards is a testament to our collective effort to create a more sustainable future. Our energy efficiency and water conservation initiatives reflect our commitment to environmental stewardship and demonstrate our leadership in fostering a culture of sustainability in education and community engagement."
MiraCosta College remains dedicated to its role as a leader in sustainability, continually seeking innovative ways to reduce its environmental footprint and promote sustainable practices within the community.
