English Literature Through the 18th Century
This course surveys writers in English literature from the Anglo-Saxon era to the eighteenth century. It covers works of at least two of the three most influential writers in the language (Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton) as well as their historical and cultural backgrounds. Students read plays; epic, religious, romantic, and satiric poetry; ballads; and non-fiction prose, including essays and biography. Eras include medieval, Renaissance, and Enlightenment.
