Dr. Sunita “Sunny” Cooke, Superintendent/President of MiraCosta College, has been named the recipient of the 2026 Harry Buttimer Distinguished Administrator Award from the Association of California Community College Administrators (ACCCA).

First presented in 1986, the “Buttimer” is ACCCA’s oldest and most prestigious award. Named for the late Harry Buttimer, a founding member of ACCCA, the award symbolizes the qualities he was known for integrity, principle, compassion, strength in leadership, and meaningful contributions to colleagues, their profession, and their college district and community.

A nomination for the Buttimer Award requires strong evidence of these characteristics and substantial support from one’s peers. Final selection of the recipient is made by the award selection committee, composed of ACCCA Board officers along with the prior year’s award recipients. The committee carefully reviews each nomination in the context of established criteria and considers all supporting documentation submitted.

This year marked a banner year for nominations, with candidates representing the very best of community college leadership across California. Dr. Cooke’s selection reflects her steadfast commitment to student success, equity, innovation, and community partnership.

Under Dr. Cooke’s leadership, MiraCosta College continues to expand opportunity and access for students throughout the region, strengthening pathways to transfer, workforce readiness, and lifelong learning. Her principled leadership and dedication to collaboration embody the legacy and spirit of the Buttimer Award.

Dr. Cooke will be formally recognized during the ACCCA’s 50th Annual Conference and Anniversary Celebration.
