Community colleges are often overlooked as a first choice, but for many, they provide a life-changing opportunity. In this opinion piece, Mark and Esther share how MiraCosta College became the turning point in their lives.

Mark, a first-generation college student from Oceanside, thought athletics was his only path. A single class at MiraCosta ignited his passion for law, leading him to a degree and a career in justice. Esther, a single mother starting over after divorce, found hope through MiraCosta’s biomanufacturing bachelor’s program, connecting her love of baking with science.

With the support of professors, mentors, and campus programs, both overcame challenges—Mark through transfer preparation and Esther by balancing multiple jobs while raising children. Their stories highlight how accessible, affordable education can help students find direction, build confidence, and create brighter futures.
