MiraCosta College Hosts Ribbon-Cutting for New Chemistry and Biotechnology Building on February 27

MiraCosta College will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony to unveil its new Chemistry and Biotechnology Building. This $42.5 million project is a cornerstone of the college’s growing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) programs.
 
The 20,630-square-foot facility features state-of-the-art chemistry and biochemistry labs, two 40-seat flexible classrooms, and various instructional, collaborative, and laboratory spaces designed to elevate MiraCosta’s STEM curriculum. The building is situated within the STEM quad and plaza and integrates cutting-edge learning technology with innovative architectural design to inspire discovery, innovation, and learning.
 
“This marks a significant milestone for MiraCosta as we open the doors to the beautiful new Chemistry and Biotechnology Building,” said Tim Flood, MiraCosta’s Vice President of Administrative Services. “As we look ahead, the world will face challenges that require innovative solutions, and STEM will play a crucial role in addressing that well into the next century,” he added. “This new building will provide our students and faculty all the tools, technology, and resources they will need in these fields to explore, innovate, and drive discoveries to shape that future.”
 
The new Chemistry and Biotechnology Building plays a critical role in supporting MiraCosta College's Biomanufacturing baccalaureate degree program. Offered since 2017, this in-demand bachelor's degree was specifically developed to meet industry needs, preparing students for high-growth careers in biomanufacturing. The state-of-the-art facility provides an enhanced learning environment that aligns with the program’s focus on innovation and workforce readiness, further establishing MiraCosta College as a leader in workforce development for the biomanufacturing sector.
Event Details
The ribbon-cutting ceremony will occur on Thursday, February 27, 2025, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at MiraCosta College, 1 Barnard Drive, Oceanside. The event is open to the public and will include remarks from district leaders, tours of the new facility, and opportunities for interviews with MiraCosta’s President/Superintendent, Dr. Sunita “Sunny” Cooke, Board President Rick Cassar, and project team members.

The new Chemistry and Biotechnology Building incorporates innovative design elements that maximize functionality and sustainability:
Weather-Protected Spaces: A 'big roof' provides shaded outdoor gathering areas and a seamless transition to the STEM quad.
Flexible Outdoor Spaces: Covered porches and screened study areas encourage collaboration and outdoor learning.
Sustainable Landscaping: Drought-tolerant and native plants create a park-like setting.
Eco-Friendly Materials: High-efficiency fixtures and sustainable finishes with warm, inviting tones complement the campus and local environment.
Open Layout: Large windows and continuous circulation routes enhance accessibility while minimizing disruptions to classes and labs.
