At the annual Community Leaders Breakfast, held at the Sheraton in Carlsbad on the morning of October 18, 2024, MiraCosta College proudly announced that Tom and Paula Wilson, along with the Wilson Family, have been named the 2024 Philanthropists of the Year. Their long-standing commitment to supporting students, particularly those impacted by the foster care system, has transformed the MiraCosta community.
The Wilson Family’s generous support has been vital to the success of the RAFFY Program (Resources and Assistance for Former Foster Youth). This program, designed to assist former foster youth in navigating college life, provides services like application and financial aid assistance, academic and personal counseling, and priority registration. The Wilson Family’s dedication has ensured countless former foster youth can pursue education and build bright futures.
"The Wilson Family is truly remarkable," said Dr. Sunny Cooke, Superintendent/President of MiraCosta College. "Their philanthropy has changed lives, and we are honored to recognize Tom and Paula Wilson and the two generations of the Wilson Family as our 2024 Philanthropists of the Year."
Dr. Cooke discussed the college’s "futures thinking" approach—preparing students for emerging industries like biotechnology, artificial intelligence, and healthcare. She also highlighted MiraCosta’s sustainability efforts, the opening of new facilities, and the college’s commitment to equity and workforce development.
Key Points from Dr. Cooke’s Address:
- Futures Thinking: MiraCosta is at the forefront of preparing students for jobs in emerging industries by integrating advancements in AI, biotech, and technology into its curriculum.
- Sustainability & Stewardship: MiraCosta has incorporated sustainability into its curriculum and operations, from student-led initiatives to installing solar panels and electric charging stations on campus.
- New Facilities: The new Student Services Facility and the soon-to-open Chemistry & Biotechnology Building will enhance student success with cutting-edge labs and learning environments.
- Apprenticeships and Internships: With over $3.5 million in grants, MiraCosta is expanding apprenticeships in cybersecurity and biotech, helping students gain real-world experience and transition into high-wage careers.
- Equity & Inclusion: MiraCosta’s Project Fuerte, funded by a recent $3 million Title V federal grant, is focused on supporting Latinx and low-income students in achieving degrees in life sciences and biotech, promoting a diverse workforce for the future. This grant helps ensure students have the resources and opportunities to succeed in these high-demand fields.
As MiraCosta celebrates its 90th anniversary, Dr. Cooke emphasized that the college is not just honoring its rich past but also building for the future. With a commitment to innovation, equity, and collaboration with community partners, MiraCosta College is poised to continue transforming lives for the next 90 years.
