MiraCosta College has raised more than $20,000 to assist students who face a financial emergency so that they can succeed in their education.
The donations were raised through a campaign tied in with the regional San Diego Gives, Day of Giving on September 5 conducted by nonprofits throughout San Diego County. MiraCosta College had a goal of raising $20,000, and ended up raising $20,090, said Brian Astredo, Development Officer for the MiraCosta College Office of Advancement.
Astredo said the fundraising goal was reached thanks to two foundation board members – Board President Janice Kurth and Vice President Karen Pearson – who each agreed to contribute $5,000 to match any donation.
“Thanks to our board members, alumni, faculty, staff and community members who contributed to this important campaign,” Astredo said. “Your support strengthens our students’ determination to succeed.”
The donations will be used for the MiraCosta College Resilience Fund, which provides funds to students who face a financial emergency such as a looming rent payment, medical bill, or transportation issues so the student can stay focused on school.
Astredo said up to 50% of MiraCosta College students could face an emergency financial situation this academic year.
“It helps keep our students on track to continue their educational goals,” he said. “They might be at risk of dropping out if their emergency needs are not met. This keeps them on course to graduate, transfer, or receive a certification.”
One student who benefited from the Resilience Fund was Andres Marin, a formerly incarcerated student who is attending MiraCosta College. Marin said he was living in his car but couldn’t afford to get it fixed until he got a grant from the MiraCosta College Foundation.
“I was able to keep rolling and continue on with the semester,” Marin said. “This amazing opportunity really helped me out.” To donate to MiraCosta College, go to
