From Classroom to Cybersecurity: MiraCosta College Alum Daphne Demarchi Transforms Her Career Path

11/8/2023

A few years ago, Daphne Demarchi was an educator teaching full-time in Asia with minimal knowledge of computer technology. Today, she is working with advanced artificial intelligence models and combating cyber threats at one of the world’s leading cybersecurity providers. Her story is a compelling testament to the transformative power of community college education.

A Change Sparked by Uncertainty

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted lives and careers globally. Daphne, an overseas educator at the time, was no exception. With schools shutting down indefinitely, she returned to the U.S., where she soon realized a career change was inevitable.

“I realized I had to make a career change," said Daphne. "For whatever reason, the universe was putting roadblocks everywhere I turned."

Embarking on a New Journey

Determined to overcome the challenges, Daphne enrolled in computer courses at MiraCosta College. Although her previous experience with technology was limited, she had the support and resources at MiraCosta College to guide her.

"Starting with basic skills, such as making PowerPoint presentations, Daphne worked diligently, ticking off each milestone on her academic plan," explained [Insert Counselor's Name], an academic counselor at MiraCosta College. "She fully immersed herself in the learning process."

MiraCosta's Cybersecurity Program: A Perfect Fit

Daphne found the perfect pathway to a rewarding tech career through MiraCosta College's Cybersecurity Program, developed in partnership with local companies like Proficio.

"Community colleges offer a unique opportunity for those making career transitions," stated Mary Werner, Talent Acquisition Partner at Proficio. "Our close relationship with MiraCosta College allows us to help tailor the curriculum to meet current job market needs."

Achieving Success and Giving Back

While still enrolled, Daphne secured an internship with Proficio as a Threat Detection Analyst. But she didn't stop at her own success; as President of the IT Club, she facilitated internship opportunities for her peers at local companies. Today, in addition to her role at Proficio, Daphne is a tutor at MiraCosta College, a technical writer, and a security consultant.

"Switching careers was a monumental decision, but it was one of the best decisions of my life," shared Daphne. "MiraCosta College set me up for success, and I couldn’t be happier with my new career."
