New Year, New You; Opportunities Abound as MiraCosta College Begins a New Spring Semester on January 23

01/23/2023

MiraCosta College, which is among the leading providers of higher education and workforce training in the region, launches its 2023 spring semester on Monday, January 23.

There is still plenty of room for students in hundreds of classes ranging from practical accounting to world religions. A list of open classes is updated daily at miracosta.edu/open.

MiraCosta College, with campuses in Oceanside, Cardiff, and Carlsbad, offers more than 75 degree and certificate programs. Classes come both on-campus and online, with more than 600 hybrid and fully online courses to choose from.

All first-time college students taking 12 or more units in a semester can receive two years of college for free. Returning students only pay $46 per unit and have access to ample scholarship and grant opportunities. Besides providing the lowest-cost, high-quality education in the nation and being among the leading transfer schools to California State University San Marcos, MiraCosta College also offers a wide variety of tuition-free, noncredit courses at the Community Learning Center in Oceanside and at several locations throughout coastal North County.

Here are some of the MiraCosta College highlights rounding into the spring semester:

  • Helping to ensure that all students are afforded the support they deserve to reach their potential, MiraCosta College has hired Dr. Wendy Stewart as its new Interim Chief Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility Officer. Dr. Stewart, who has a master’s degree in counseling from San Diego State University and a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Southern California, had been serving as MiraCosta College’s Dean of Counseling and Student Development.
  • Speaking of new, MiraCosta College has introduced several new programs, including a Supply Chain Management certificate that can be critical in today’s increasingly globalized environment, an Affordable Housing Management certificate in cooperation with the San Diego Housing Federation, and a Teacher’s Aide certificate that can prepare you for entry-level employment as an instructional aide.
  • With approximately 500 students being members of 28 campus organizations, MiraCosta College is holding a Student Club Leadership Training for new and returning club members and leaders. The workshop will cover club policies, procedures, and personal and professional development workshops, all while providing an opportunity for students to get to know and collaborate with each other. “I was a former student and I would have loved to have had something like this,” said workshop coordinator Allura Murray-Cruz, who serves as MiraCosta College’s Interim Inter-Club Council Advisor and Student Services Specialist. The workshop will be held in the Oceanside Campus’s 3400 building; students can RSVP by emailing Murray-Cruz at amcruz@miracosta.edu or by registering via tinyurl.com/nm376xyn.
  • Progress on the Measure MM construction projects is continuing. A major renovation of the nearly 19,000-square-foot Administration Building at the Oceanside Campus is wrapping up, and a groundbreaking for a new, $21.7 million Arts and Media Building is scheduled to take place on February 27. Ongoing projects at the Oceanside Campus include the new 28,251-square-foot Theresia M. Heyden Hall for Nursing & Allied Health Building, a new 23,931-square-foot Chemistry and Biotechnology Building, a new 54,556-square-foot Student Services Building, and a new 40,915-square-foot Kinesiology, Health & Nutrition Building.
