Commencement 2022 Safety Protocols Update

05/26/2022

Dear MiraCosta Graduates, Employees, and Commencement Guests,

MiraCosta College is excited to celebrate our 2022 Commencement with you this Friday, May 27, at 5 p.m. on the Oceanside Campus Athletic Track & Field. Commencement is a time to celebrate the achievement of all our graduates. We are thrilled to have approximately 530 graduates who have RSVP’d to participate in the event.

As part of MiraCosta College’s commitment to uphold a safe, secure, and enjoyable event for all participants involved, it will be important for us all to follow the 2022 Commencement Ceremony policies described below. The added security measures are entirely precautionary.

BAGS: Bags no larger than 12” x 6” x 12” will be admitted into the event.
Limiting the size and style of bags carried into the Commencement Ceremony aids in maintaining a safe and secure environment, decreases the time waiting to enter the venue, and improves the overall event experience.

A visual review will occur to ensure bags meet the requirement. Guests with a prohibited bag will not be permitted inside the venue and will need to return their bags to their vehicle or transfer their belongings to an approved clear plastic bag before entering the venue (clear plastic bags will be available as needed). All appropriately-sized bags will be reviewed by event security.

To facilitate the speed of entry, please leave bags, gifts, parcels, and unnecessary items in your car or at home. Only bring essential items to the Commencement event.

WEAPONS: MiraCosta College Administrative Procedure (AP) 3530: Weapons on Campus explains, “Firearms, knives, explosives, or other dangerous objects, including but not limited to any facsimile firearm, knife, or explosive, are prohibited on any District campus, or at any District center, or in any facility of the District. Bringing onto the grounds or possessing any dirk, dagger, ice pick, knife having a fixed blade longer than 2.5 inches, or a tool altered for use as a weapon is prohibited on any District campus.” As a result, weapons should remain at home, as they are not permitted on campus.

DRUGS & ALCOHOL:  The unlawful manufacture, distribution, dispensing, possession, or use of alcohol, or any controlled substance is prohibited on District property, during District-sponsored activities, and in any facility operated by the District, except as permitted in Administrative Procedure (AP) 3560, Alcoholic Beverages.

SECURITY: Additional security will be present to assist with small bag check, traffic control, and crowds. Security will assist in securing the hills and perimeter of the Track and Field.

PARKING: College Police will not enforce parking permits for guests attending the Commencement Ceremony. Most guests will be directed to park in Lot 5A, and ADA parking will be available in Lot 4C. If the parking lots are full, parking will be available in the following parking lots: Lot 2A, 2B, 3A, 3B, 3C, and 3E. (Map of MiraCosta College’s Oceanside Campus)

ARRIVE EARLY: The MiraCosta College Commencement is a highly anticipated event. Plan to arrive early to avoid traffic, find parking, and allow for additional delay at bag check. Event doors will open to all graduates and commencement guests at 3 p.m.

COVID POLICY: Masks are recommended for those who are not fully vaccinated. MiraCosta College asks all graduates, their guests, and employees to stay home if, within fourteen (14) days prior to the event, any of the following apply: (i) tested positive or presumptively positive for Communicable Disease or was identified as a potential carrier of Communicable Disease, (ii) experienced any symptoms commonly associated with Communicable Disease, including, without limitation, fever, cough, loss of sense of taste or smell, or shortness of breath; (iii) traveled to a country that is subject to a U.S. State Department Level 4 “Do Not Travel” Advisory or a CDC Level 3 Travel Health Notice (each, a “Prohibited Country”), and/or (iv) was in direct contact with or the immediate vicinity of any person who is either confirmed or suspected of being infected with Communicable Disease or who has traveled to a Prohibited Country within fourteen (14) days preceding.

Masks will be available for guests and sanitization stations will be located throughout the event.

LIVE STREAM: Families and loved ones are welcome to tune in to the event via live stream, which will be available at: 2022 Commencement Livestream.

MiraCosta College is excited to celebrate our 2022 graduates on Friday and we appreciate your cooperation as we uphold a safe, secure, and enjoyable environment for all participants.

Sincerely,
Public Information Office
