MiraCosta College to Host STREAM Festival on Oceanside Campus

04/22/2022

The MiraCosta College STREAM Festival is back! After holding the event virtually last year due to COVID-19, it is returning to in-person activities. The STREAM Festival will be held on April 30 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Oceanside Campus.

This year’s event, hosted annually by the MiraCosta Service Learning Program, will have 50 booths and five community partners participating. The reduced booths are a precautionary measure taken due to COVID-19. In addition, all the activities will be held outdoors to ensure the safety of all the attendees, and the event organizers encourage attendees to wear face masks.

Service Learning Program Manager Beatriz Palmer shares her excitement for the upcoming event. “This year’s STREAM is being held during Dia del Niño, which means Day of the Child, a holiday celebrated in Mexico and Latin America in honor of children/youth. It’s exciting to provide a physical space for our students to share their course-connected STREAM projects,” said Palmer.

“STREAM stands for science, technology, reading, engineering, arts, and math. It is equally exciting to invite our community (families with children) to our beautiful college campus, considering we are still in unprecedented pandemic times,” she adds.

This year’s event will have Vista Community Clinic, San Diego County Library, Vista, and MAAC Child Development as community partners. While the event is scaled down this year, among the 50 student and faculty leading booths are the Sustainability and MANA Club (Asian Pacific Islander Club) who put together seven activities focusing on coral reefs, oceanography, and AAPI culture and scientists who have contributed to this field. In addition, there will be booths from the STEM Center, Black Student Union, Horticulture, Anthropology, Veterans, ACP, Psychology, Business, Art/Film, Library, Sociology, Letters, and many more.

Service Learning encourages families with children ages preschool to 8th-grade to come to campus and enjoy a few hours of free family, educational, and hands-on fun! The activities are created with preschool to 8th-grade students in mind, but the student presenters are ready to explain the concepts to parents and high school students.

Families who would like to attend can pre-register using this bilingual link. Pre-registration is not required.

“You are never too young or too old to learn and grow in your curiosity for STREAM,” says Palmer.

“I hope that our community (adults and kids) get to learn more about our beautiful MiraCosta College and all of its resources, and learn that science is fun! Mostly I hope that whoever comes to our event knows that a STEM career path is attainable, and that MiraCosta College is their college!”

MiraCosta students can get involved with this year’s STREAM Festival by volunteering with event logistics, prepping a few days before, set-up, volunteer and presenter check-in, and area leads. Students can register online through this link; they can also email servicelearning@miracosta.edu or call the Service Learning Office at 760.795.6616.
