Frida Villeda has come a long way since she first enrolled at MiraCosta College. “I was so nervous back then! I wanted to be a part of the Theatre Department but I was terrified to audition.” Now graduated and a theatre major at the University of California San Diego, she’s returning to MiraCosta as the assistant director of 14, a play written by Jose Casas that consists entirely of monologues.
Villeda credits MiraCosta professor Tracy Williams for pushing her beyond a hesitant (and nervous) new student into an active participant of the Theatre Department. “I took a voice and diction class with Tracy at first. She was so passionate about her work she literally glowed. It was hard not to be inspired! Then I took acting with Eric Bishop, who turned out to be just as passionate as Tracy. It was a gift to learn from teachers so dedicated to their craft and their students.”
The opportunity to work with Theatre Department professor Eric Bishop is a dream come true. “I can’t believe I’m working with him now,” Villeda says.” Bishop is equally complimentary of Villeda. “Frida is a passionate, undocumented artist who wants to create meaningful theatre, advocating equity, compassion, and justice for under-represented communities.”
You can tell by Villeda’s voice that she’s ecstatic to be involved with the spring production. 14 is inspired by a tragic event that happened in May 2001, when a smuggler abandoned 30 Mexicans crossing the border near Yuma, Arizona, resulting in fourteen of them dying from dehydration. The play is based on public accounts and interviews Casas conducted with Arizonans and Mexicans to shed light on immigration, race, and public policy.
“The monologues capture different perspectives on immigration and race. It’s very contemporary and relevant. They play makes you think. There’s something for everyone, no matter what your viewpoint,” explains Villeda.
Villeda adds, “As a Mexican immigrant, 14 really spoke to me. I started crying the first time I read it. Now, I can’t wait to share the story with the audience.”
She’s also excited by the challenge of producing a play during a pandemic, where we no longer gather in groups. “You would think putting on a play would be impossible but there are some interesting and creative things you can do using Zoom to pull off a show. Plus, because it’s online, we can reach a larger audience, including people who might not consider going to the theatre.”
After she graduates from UCSD, Villeda plans to audition for theatre companies and film. “I’m going to live with my girlfriend, who’s a filmmaker. We want to work together, to change things, to bring under-represented communities to light.”

Frida Villeda ha recorrido un largo camino desde que se inscribió por primera vez en MiraCosta College. “¡Estaba tan nerviosa en ese entonces! Quería ser parte del Departamento de Teatro, pero me aterrorizaba la audición." Ahora, graduada y con especialización en teatro en la Universidad de California, San Diego, regresa a MiraCosta como directora asistente de 14, una obra de teatro escrita por José Casas que consiste enteramente en monólogos.
Villeda reconoce a la profesora de MiraCosta, Tracy Williams, por empujarla más allá de ser una nueva estudiante vacilante (y nerviosa), a una participante activa del Departamento de Teatro. “Tomé una clase de voz y dicción con Tracy al principio. Estaba tan apasionada por su trabajo que literalmente brillaba. ¡Fue difícil no estar inspirada! Luego, comencé a actuar con Eric Bishop, quien resultó ser tan apasionado como Tracy. Fue un regalo aprender de profesores tan dedicados a su oficio y a sus alumnus.”
La oportunidad de trabajar con el profesor del Departamento de Teatro Eric Bishop es un sueño hecho realidad. "No puedo creer que esté trabajando con él ahora," dice Villeda. Bishop es igualmente reconocido como Villeda. “Frida es una artista apasionada e indocumentada que quiere crear un teatro significativo, defendiendo la equidad, la compasión y la justicia para las comunidades subrepresentadas.”
Por la voz de Villeda se nota que está encantada de participar en la producción de primavera. 14 se inspira en un trágico evento que ocurrió en mayo de 2001 cuando un contrabandista abandonó a 30 mexicanos que cruzaban la frontera cerca de Yuma, Arizona, lo que resultó en que catorce de ellos murieran por deshidratación. La obra se basa en relatos públicos y entrevistas que Casas realizó con arizonianos y mexicanos para arrojar luz sobre la inmigración, raza y políticas públicas.
“Los monólogos capturan diferentes perspectivas sobre la inmigración y la raza. Es muy actual y relevante. Su puesta en escena nos hace pensar. Hay algo para todos, sea cual sea su punto de vista,” explica Villeda.
Villeda agrega, “Como inmigrante mexicana, 14 realmente me habló. Empecé a llorar la primera vez que la leí. Ahora, no puedo esperar para compartir la historia con la audiencia."
También está emocionada por el desafío de producir una obra de teatro durante una pandemia, donde ya no nos reunimos en grupos. “Uno pensaría que montar una obra de teatro sería imposible pero hay algunas cosas interesantes y creativas que puede hacer con Zoom para llevar a cabo un espectáculo. Además, debido a que está en línea, podemos llegar a un público más amplio, incluidas personas que tal vez no consideren ir al cine."
Después de graduarse de UCSD, Villeda planea hacer una audición para compañías de teatro y cine. “Voy a vivir con mi amiga, quien es cineasta. Queremos trabajar juntas, cambiar las cosas, sacar a la luz comunidades subrepresentadas.”
La obra de teatro 14 se estrenará el 29 de Abril y continuará hasta el 9 de Mayo, 2021. La obra es gratis para todos los que quieran verla
