Grace Allen’s story doesn’t begin with a cap and gown.
It begins with uncertainty. A young woman balancing motherhood, self-doubt, and the weight of a past that told her she might not belong in a classroom.
But even in the hardest chapters, Grace carried something powerful: the quiet belief that her story wasn’t over yet. "I decided that I was just going to prioritize going to college," Allen says. "Even if I have to go slow as a snail, I am dedicated, I am going to do it, no matter how long it takes."
That belief led her to the Community Learning Center at MiraCosta College. What started with a simple hope to finally earn her high school diploma became a turning point. There, she found teachers who saw her potential before she could see it herself.
"It was like night and day," Allen recalls of the faculty. "They really wanted me to understand what they were teaching. I just felt so supported by them."
They taught her lessons that stretched far beyond textbooks: that persistence matters, that progress counts, and that it’s never too late to begin again. In 2022, Grace crossed the stage as a graduate of MiraCosta’s Adult High School. That moment didn’t just mark the end of one journey, it ignited another.
With a renewed sense of purpose, Grace enrolled in college classes, majoring in psychology. She discovered that understanding the human mind and the emotions behind people’s choices was more than an academic interest, it was personal. Every lecture, every late-night paper, became part of a larger goal to help others rebuild their lives the way she rebuilt hers.
"I want to be able to help people one day, and give back to my community," she says. "That would be amazing, to feel like I'm giving back now.”
Now on track to earn her associate degree in 2026, Grace has applied to transfer to UC San Diego to study psychological science, a field that blends psychology and sociology with a focus on serving underserved communities. It’s work that connects directly to her lived experience and to her heart.
Scholarships, such as the Sally Foster Endowed Scholarship, have helped Grace stay focused, not only by easing financial burdens but also by sending a message of belief: You belong here.
"I just feel so supported," Allen explains. "It’s like this encouragement, like, keep going, you're going in the right direction, people believe in me."
Grace is a mother of three, a scholar, and a storyteller of resilience. Whether she’s speaking at graduations, serving on panels, or studying in a quiet campus corner, she carries a purpose that guides every step, turning her challenges into hope for others.
