Meet Salvador De Leon

Salvador De Leon doesn’t wait for the future to arrive; he builds it early. A proud Oceanside native and student at El Camino High Sczhool, Salvador made a choice that would quietly reshape his path. He enrolled in college courses at MiraCosta College while still in high school, not because anyone told him to, but because he wanted to discover what was possible.

For Salvador, dual enrollment wasn’t just about getting ahead. It was about exploration. “I wanted to find out what I liked before committing to a college,” he shared.

That curiosity quickly turned into momentum. What began with Spanish and precalculus evolved into a rigorous journey through advanced mathematics, linear algebra, differential equations, and Calculus III. By the time he graduates high school, Salvador will also earn two associate degrees: one in Mathematics and another in Liberal Arts with a focus on science and math.

But numbers alone don’t tell his story. Behind every class, every late night, and every challenge was a deeper motivation, one rooted in both family and purpose. Salvador grew up surrounded by encouragement. His parents didn’t push him, they believed in him. That belief became his foundation.

“My dad always said, ‘as much you study, as much you make,’” Salvador reflected. “But for me, it’s really about making a difference… making an impact for other people.”

Grounded, humble, and forward-looking, Salvador’s mindset helped him navigate moments of doubt. Like many high-achieving students, Salvador admits he used to feel discouraged by setbacks. Now, he sees them differently. “Don’t stress out about a small failure,” he says. “Use it to improve.”

His journey has also been shaped by community. From spotting opportunities in his school’s College and Career Center to finding support through AVID, Salvador took initiative, seeking out resources, asking questions, and stepping into spaces that expanded his vision.

Outside the classroom, he built real-world experience as a math tutor, a project engineering intern on a construction site, and now as a team member at LEGOLAND California. Balancing work, academics, and ambition with quiet determination.

And that ambition has taken him to extraordinary places. Salvador has been accepted to Harvard University, where he plans to pursue engineering, with aspirations that reach even further toward aerospace, innovation, and organizations like NASA.

Yet even with these achievements, Salvador remains grounded in something simple and powerful: possibility. He knows his story matters not because it is rare, but because it is replicable. “If I can do it,” he says, “then they can definitely do it too.”

Salvador represents what happens when access meets initiative, when a student is given the opportunity to explore and chooses to go all in. Through dual enrollment at MiraCosta College, he didn’t just earn college credits, he built confidence, clarity, and a vision for impact.

And he’s just getting started.
