Meet Ethan Kirkman

"What motivates me is people believing in me and me believing in myself," said Ethan Kirkman, reflecting on his educational journey at MiraCosta College.

For Ethan, who will soon earn his second associate's degree from the institution, MiraCosta College has been more than just a place of learning. It has been a launchpad for his professional aspirations and personal growth.

Ethan first became familiar with MiraCosta College during his time at Torrey Pines High School. Given the school's close connection with the local business sectors, he was drawn to the fact that the college had such a wide range of programs for students to choose from, especially those offering immediate job and internship opportunities.

Years later, when it came time for Ethan to continue his academic journey, it was only natural that he enrolled at MiraCosta College. Yet this was still at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and most classes were still being held online. Ethan was unsure what that would mean for his own experience.

"I took all of my classes online that first year," recalled Ethan. "But even though we weren't in person, the teachers were still so caring, patient, and supportive. They spent extra time after classes making sure we knew the material and answering questions."

This support proved invaluable. As Ethan describes it, what has always stood out the most is how the faculty recognized and nurtured his potential. As someone living with autism, Ethan appreciates how MiraCosta created an environment where his unique traits were seen as assets rather than limitations.
"I wasn't sure what to expect initially," Ethan explained. "I always thought it would be hard for me to get the most out of life. But MiraCosta College showed me that people with autism have the same chance for success as everyone else. All it takes is to have professors, staff, and mentors who see our potential."

The supportive culture at MiraCosta College is also what has kept Ethan coming back. Driven by his dream to pursue a career in management, Ethan decided to return to MiraCosta College last year to further his education, with the goal of obtaining the credits necessary to continue on and pursue a bachelor's degree in business administration.

Currently working full-time as a sales consultant at a local FedEx Office while completing his studies, Ethan balances professional responsibilities with academic excellence. His dedication has not gone unnoticed. He was recently recognized as one of the top alumni and current students at MiraCosta College, and also serves as an honors ambassador for the Management and Strategy Institute, where he's been awarded a senior fellowship. To expand his knowledge and enhance his potential for success in a bachelor's degree in management, Ethan obtained a Mini-MBA from the International Business Management Institute and a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt from The Council for Six Sigma Certification.

His five-year plan demonstrates both determination and self-awareness: "In five years, I see myself in a senior assistant role and then moving toward management. As long as I'm humble with myself and others, I know that I'll be able to accomplish those goals."

While Ethan's educational journey is far from over, MiraCosta College will always be his home away from home, even long after he moves on. From the instructors who bring their real-world professional expertise to the classroom to the unwavering support of the staff, Ethan cannot say enough about the environment on campus.

"MiraCosta, out of all colleges, offers the most unique opportunities," noted Ethan. "For those who are just out of high school and don't know what to do, the faculty, counselors, and the Student Accessibility Services team are there to help you learn more in the field of education."

Ethan's success exemplifies MiraCosta College's commitment to providing an environment where diverse learners can thrive. By recognizing each student's unique potential and offering personalized support, MiraCosta empowers each and every one of its students to pursue their aspirations with confidence and determination.
