Mentorship & Opportunity:
The Transformative Impact of Dual Enrollment
When Alexa Betancourt’s high school counselor introduced her to MiraCosta College’s Dual Enrollment Program, she had no idea it would shape her future. That conversation set her on a path to becoming a changemaker for her community and future generations of leaders.
Despite the challenges of high school during the COVID-19 pandemic, Alexa excelled. Still, like many students, she was uncertain about her career path until Dual Enrollment opened new possibilities.
“I had wavering ideas, and I didn’t want to pick the wrong thing—go into debt and get a degree I’d never use. That’s why the Dual Enrollment Program was such an appealing opportunity,” Alexa shared.
MiraCosta College’s Dual Enrollment Program allows high school students to take college courses while earning credits toward a degree. Alexa started with just one class, testing the waters. Though adjusting from Google Classroom to Canvas was initially challenging, MiraCosta College’s faculty and staff made the transition seamless.
“My instructors and counselors went the extra mile and made themselves available whenever I needed extra support,” Alexa explained.
Beyond academics, Alexa found representation and connection at MiraCosta College. In Professor Rita Naranjo’s sociology class, she engaged with peers and a professor who shared her cultural background, strengthening her sense of belonging.
A pivotal moment came when Alexa landed an internship with the City of Oceanside’s Housing Department through a MiraCosta College course. One day, her supervisor took her to an after-school program, where she saw local children light up with excitement while learning.
“Seeing the way the children responded to the teacher and found joy in learning was beyond inspiring,” Alexa said.
In that moment, her future became clear.
“I saw the profound impact that a positive mentor and teacher could have on a young person’s life, and I knew that was my calling.”
Alexa shifted her focus to child development, aligning her MiraCosta College coursework with her new goal. With nearly all her credits completed, she will graduate this spring and transfer to a four-year university—being one step closer to her dream of mentoring and teaching children.
“Children have such a special place in my heart,” she shared. “I’m grateful to MiraCosta College for helping me discover this passion and paving the way for my future.”
As she prepares to transfer to a UC program, Alexa carries more than just college credits. She carries the connections, mentorship, and clarity that MiraCosta College made possible.
