Beginning his career as an adjunct instructor and later becoming a full-time faculty
member, Paul Katson has dedicated over 20 years to developing the
AutomotiveTechnology program and supporting student success at MiraCosta College.
As a tenured instructor, Paul oversees department administration and programs,
ensuring students receive a comprehensive education that meets the demands of the
ever-evolving automotive industry. His passion is preparing students for both entry-level
and advanced employment opportunities, equipping them with the skills and knowledge
to thrive in the rapidly advancing automotive field.
With more than 30 years of automotive industry experience, Paul specializes in
mechanical automotive repair, plus auto detailing and reconditioning. He holds a
Bachelors in Vocational Education from San Diego State University, as well as a
Certificate of Competence and Associate of Arts Degree in Automotive Technology from
MiraCosta College. He has earned credentials as an ASE Certified Master Automobile
Technician and L1 Advanced Engine Performance. He is a Certified SMOG Check
Technician and Certified Smog Training Instructor through the California Bureau of
Automotive Repair, and a Certified Detailer and Skills Validated member of the
International Detailers Association. Additional training includes Hybrid, EV and Tesla.
Before joining MiraCosta College as a full-time faculty member, Paul owned and
operated an automotive repair and inspection company for 14 years, serving retail and
wholesale clients, including consumers, credit unions, and government agencies. His
business was recognized for its excellent customer service and high-quality work. Paul’s
expertise has also made him a court-recognized expert witness in automotive “Lemon
Law” litigation, as well as a professional consultant in the auto detailing industry, where
he has provided marketing strategies for detailing product manufacturers entering the
U.S. market.
In 2019, Paul was named one of three finalists for the distinguished SEMA-NACAT
Education Award (awarded to recipients in both the US and Canada), which recognizes
automotive educators who emphasize and teach aftermarket technology in their
classrooms. This honor highlights his dedication to integrating cutting-edge
advancements into his curriculum.
Paul remains deeply committed to the growth and success of the Automotive
Technology Department at MiraCosta College, ensuring it continues to serve as a center
of excellence for future automotive professionals.
