This accelerated hybrid course requires both attendance in a traditional classroom two days per week, and approximately 20 hours per week completing work online. We will cover in 8 weeks exactly what is covered in a 16-week course. It is designed for students who are self-motivated, have exceptional time-management skills, and can study and learn grammar concepts without a lot of guidance of an instructor. Before class you will study vocabulary, watch video tutorials and read explanations in the textbook. In class you will practice these newly acquired skills. Then, after class you will be asked to complete follow-up activities to give you additional practice. You will also need to schedule a time each week to meetup with a partner.Your instructor, of course, will be available during office hours for additional explanation and assistance if students have questions. Students are strongly encouraged to take advantage of tutoring, that is available both online and on campus. Language Coaches are also available in the Language Labs on both the Oceanside and San Elijo campuses. An in-person orientation at the Oceanside Campus will be provided the first week of the semester. The orientation is not mandatory but strongly recommended. The course will have two proctored exams, the Midterm and the Final Exam. These are cumulative exams and must be taken at the MiraCosta Proctoring Center or at an approved alternative location. If you do not live in the area you will need to call the Academic Proctoring Center (https://www.miracosta.edu/studentservices/proctoringcenter/outofsdcounty.html) to make arrangements to take the exams at an approved off-campus site.As you will see, this class requires technology access. Make sure that you have access to a relatively fast and reliable computer and internet connection. Without it, you won’t be able to complete the online assignments that are necessary for the course. As you will also discover, this course is not an easier version of SPAN 101, in fact many will say that it is more difficult, since you must have excellent time management skills to complete most of the learning before coming to class where you will apply it. This is also not a self-paced course. We will cover the first seven chapters of our textbook, roughly 1 week per chapter. Remember, this is a hybrid course, so it is essential that you complete introduction assignments BEFORE coming to class, and attendance in class is mandatory. Follow-up activities are equally important, and will include interactions with your classmates on a weekly basis. Those interactions you have may occur on campus, online or at a coffee house. Where and when you meet with your classmates is up to you, but you will need to schedule time every week to do so.Recommendation: Buy your books early! The least expensive version is the one that you see below, which will ship directly to your home. To purchase the correct package for your course, search for ISBN: [978-1-62680-682-5] on the Vista Higher Learning store (http://vistahigherlearning.com/store/miracosta.htm) or buy complete packages at the school bookstore. Warning: Used and rented books bought elsewhere do not include the code you need and you will spend more if you buy your textbook and Supersite code separately. If you have already have a basic knowledge of Spanish, you are encouraged to consider enrolling in SPAN 203, Spanish for Heritage Speakers. SPAN 203 is the same level as SPAN 201 and is designed for students that already speak Spanish. Another alternative for Heritage Speakers is to take Credit by Exam, an option that allows students to prepare on their own during the semester and take an exam at the end of the term. This option, however, should only be considered by students that already have a strong background in Spanish. If you are interested in either option, contact Profesora Rosa Viramontes at: email@example.com.
