Mentoring for Online Instruction --
Th 8/21 1-1:50 pm
Facilitators: Robert Kelley and Linda Shaffer
The workshop will present to faculty the opportunity
to form a mentor/mentee relationship, as they
learn about and incorporate online elements into
their courses. Subsequently, the mentee and mentor
can then meet decide what to focus upon, gain
an idea of when most of the mentor/mentee hours
might occur during the semester (is help needed
primarily up front, or instead sprinkled throughout
the semester), and number of hours available for
the flex activity. Note: Faculty are expected
to only claim the hours that they participated
in this flex activity, up to a maximum of fifteen
hours (non-itemized). Faculty are not obligated
or expected to complete all fifteen hours, rather
that is the upper limit of hours that can be claimed
for this mentor/mentee online elements professional
development activity.

- Get AP&P Approval Now
to Teach Online/Hybrid Later... -- Th 8/21
10:30-12:20
Facilitators: Robert Kelley, Julie Romaine, Somphone
Chen
Location: OC4607
There can easily be a year-long gap between deciding
that you'd like to offer a course online, and
getting the AP&P approval to do so. Consider
talking with your department members to find out
what courses you think would make sense to offer
online, and getting approval in place now so that
they could potentially be taught online as early
as Fall '09. This will be a hands-on workshop,
where after a brief overview, you'll learn about
general questions to consider, be assisted with
how to complete the WebCMS form, and find out
about the required meeting with our Access Specialist
Somphone Chen (note: Somphone will put aside 1
- 3pm to later meet with interested faculty).
WebCMS deadlines are early, so join us in a supportive
environment to start the approval process for
your department's courses
* Cool PowerPoint Tricks - Th 8/21 8-9:50 am
Facilitator: Karl Golemo
Location: OC4610
Many faculty use PowerPoint but don't realize
what a powerful multimedia tool it can be. Join
PowerPoint expert Karl Golemo to learn how to
create animation and audio to "powerize" online
lectures.
* Using ETUDES-NG - M 8/18 9-10:50 am
Facilitator: John Turbeville
Location: OC4529
With the demise of the legacy ETUDES system,
Foothill College has developed ETUDES-NG, the
robust course management system being piloted
this year by the Technology and Pedagogy Committee.
This workshop will provide an introduction to
the system and a demonstration of its many features.
* Using Moodle - M 8/18 1-2:50 pm
Facilitator: Lisa M. Lane (Jim assisting)
Location: OC4610
MiraCosta is piloting Moodle, a course management
system based on constructivist theory which
is surprisingly easy to use. Unlike Blackboard,
Moodle is organized like a syllabus, and lets
you select which features you want to use as
you build your class. This workshop will walk
participants through setting up and running
class in Moodle, and explain the various features
of this system.
* Second Life: What's In It for Educators? -- T 8/19 9-11:50 am
Randall Cornish and Carolyn O'Barr

created by visitors and residents who interact
with one another in real time via the Internet
using the free Second Life software program.
In this workshop, we take a “field trip” to
Second Life. Participants learn how to register
for free and create an avatar. Participants
learn how to walk, fly and teleport from place
to place in Second Life. Participants learn
how to communicate with others, make friends
and join groups. Participants learn “in-world” terminology,
slang, customs and etiquette.
* Using iPods to
Enhance Student Learning --
W 8/20 2:00-3:50 pm
Facilitator: Shirley Olsen
Location: OC4622
This hands-on workshop will focus on how to use
iPods in order to improve oral performance, enhance
communication skills, and heighten interest in
language studies. Although the workshop content
will be geared toward learning a second language,
all instructors with oral performance-based classes
are welcome to learn about and participate in
this pilot program. Microphones and iPods will
be available during the workshop. However, if
you already own an iPod, bring it along to use.
