Announcing F2F: On-campus Get-togethers for Online Instructors starts October 5

Many of our online instructors have been asking for a way to meet each other on campus and exchange ideas in person. Laura Paciorek will be leading our new F2F series of workshops. The first one is next Tuesday!

Tentative Date and Time: Tuesday, October 5, 2010 from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m.
Location: To be announced (see the flex website after Wednesday)

This month's face-to-face get-together will focus on presentations, specific presentation tools (e.g., Prezi), and how to set up presentations while keeping pedagogy in mind.  Please come with thoughts about presentations, examples of your own presentations (a computer will be available), and/or questions about presentations.  The main focus will be on sharing and learning from one another.  Future face-to-face get-together topics and possible dates/times will also be discussed.

January Workshop Day for Beginners

Plan ahead for January 20, when POT plans to offer an all-day workshop for novice and beginning online instructors.

This workshop will go from the basics to creating elements for an online class, and will be led by some of MiraCosta's most experienced online instructors. Stay tuned...

For intermediate and advanced online instructors, our focus will shift to our First Friday simul-learn sessions and more online workshops, where more advanced techniques will be explored in the online environment.

Come join the conversation!

The heart of MCC's online learning community is the Pedagogy First! blog.

Even if you are not enrolled to earn a POT certificate, you should consider joining the conversation -- it is open to all online instructors of all levels. We currently have two cohorts of MiraCostans posting weekly with advice, questions, and examples of what they're doing online. You can just read or subscribe. Anyone may add comments -- please join us!

POT, the "Practical" Workshop and the Importance of Play

We had a number of requests at the MiniConference in August to please offer more "how to" and "practical" workshops in technologies for both on-site and online teaching. We understand!  That's why, during the MiniConference, the 4622 lab was set up with over a dozen cool tools, complete with accounts to sign in immediately and play with these technologies. Yet few came to play. :-(

Unlike old-style software that you pay hundreds of dollars for and that come in a box, many of today's web programs are easy-to-use and simpler, often focusing on just one thing (create a slideshow, share bookmarks, edit a photo, create a web page). All you have to do to learn them is play. Here's our list of cool apps from the MiniConference -- won't you give them a try?

For the more complex programs, many tutorials are available online via YouTube and elsewhere, including POT's own website. We also have extensive recordings about using these technologies for classes, both in video and webcast formats. Self-guided learning via the web is a very important skill for online teachers to cultivate, and we provide the resources to do it.

Exploring Cool Tools

In addition, POT's Certificate program offers weekly, independent exploration and practice with many different tools. You can join us in exploring these, even if you aren't part of the Certificate pathway, by using any cohort's task list. Join us in exploring these technologies!

We have also updated our Tools list on the POT website with all the tools offered for exploration and discussed at the our many workshops, including links to Jing, Prezi, Piknik, Diigo and much much more!

Got Blackboard? Need training?

The Program for Online Teaching does make some distinction between pedagogical guidance (faculty teaching faculty about instructional theory and practice in technology-based environments) and training (hands-on workshops about particular technologies, which buttons to press). Training for college-supported technology at MiraCosta is offered by our wonderful AIS staff. Karen Korstad offers workshops in Blackboard, as well as sitting down with faculty individually to help their training. Robert Erichsen is MCC's expert in universal design, to help us reach all students. They are our go-to, how-to people.

Subscribe to the POT site

Did you know you can subscribe to the POT site, so you know when new videos, tools and information are posted? Just look for the Subscribe box to get the news via email or feed.

Interested in ePortfolios?

A new Google Group is forming, moderated by Patty Donohue at the California Virtual Campus.  Their description: "The purpose of this group is to build a collaborative community of California faculty, students, institutions, and industry leaders, interested in the evolution and exploration of electronic portfolios in education. This group is open to the public and we encourage your participation." Join by requesting at the Google Group site: http://bit.ly/ePortfolio.

Upcoming Conferences

Two great conferences, but at the same time!

POT Website Updated

The POT site has been updated in a number of ways.

For Moodlers, there is now a direct link to Moodle Faculty Support.

A new (beta) forum page is there for questions and discussion.

New recordings and videos from this summer include:

And, we can now be found via the Search page on MiraCosta's main web site. Thanks, Zak!

Start Earning an Online Teaching Certificate: deadline is September 1 for Cohort #3

POT's third cohort for earning a certificate begins September 1. If you would like to join the program, which includes two semesters of extensive, guided blogging and learning at Pedagogy First!, please contact Lisa M. Lane and Jim Sullivan to be added to the cohort.

Consider Updating Your Course Links

The Distance Education schedule page (aka the CyberCosta Page) lists all the online sections being offered. The default link for each goes to just a course description and SLOs, which can be frustrating for students seeking more information on your class.

Why not link your class to a welcoming information web page, or other place? AIS has posted instructions at:

How to update your classes on the CyberCosta schedule page .

If you've never created or updated a web page....

Great Tutorials on Creating, Editing and Uploading Web Pages

Want to update that old MCC home page with the outdated photo? And how do you get it on the web once you do? We have been hard at work creating video tutorials to help!

An online editor can be used to create or edit pages: here's my tutorial for how to do it using the free Online HTML Editor.

Karen Korstad has created a great tutorial on uploading to the server for PC users: Uploading to MCC’s server from your computer. Instructions for Mac users will be coming soon!

Hooked on Ning?

A number of MCC instructors became hooked on a wonderful web 2.0 social networking platform called Ning, and were using it to host both online and on-site classes over the past several years. This summer, Ning went for-profit, at unusually high prices. A free "Ning Mini" can be hosted by Pearson publishing for educators. For those who needed the more full-featured Ning, AIS dean Mario Valente in consultation with online dean Ric Matthews have found funding for just a few accounts of Ning Plus, based on faculty pleas over the summer. There is one unclaimed Ning Plus account left -- contact Ric Matthews if you've just gotta have it!

Online instructors now have representation through MOE

The new MiraCosta Online Educators ad hoc committee has formed to provide a faculty voice in all issues pertaining to online teaching, hybrid instruction, and teaching with technology. As the committee gets started, you will have an opportunity to have questions answered and issues forwarded.

Happy online, hybrid and technology-enhanced teaching!

New Cohort for the Certificate Program starts September 1

Join us on the pathway to an online teaching certificate -- our third cohort begins September 1. The certificate requires a number of POT workshops and a blogging/community requirement, where faculty explore online techniques and technologies the first semester, and apply them the second semester. See our certificate page for more information.

Workshop recordings and flex credit

A lot of faculty watch videos and Elluminate recordings from sessions after they happen. You can now use such viewing for flex credit!

You can watch any of the recordings at the POT site (or other professional development sites approved by POT as indicated at the POT website) and count it as flex under Conference Attendance so long as the following conditions are met:

1. You post on the Pedagogy First! blog a reflection of 250 words (contact Jim Sullivan if you need an account at the blog), and

2. You add the URL of that post to the "Location" text box on the Conference Attendance form, and

3. As with other conferences, the work must be done outside of teaching hours.

Slides and materials from Shafin Ali's Camtasia session and Laura Paciorek's Connections in Online Classes are available at the POT site, as are many videos and recordings from previous sessions!

Conferences and online learning opportunities

The Online Teaching Conference 2010 is at San Diego City College June 16-18. It is sponsored by California Educational Technology Consortium (CETC), and Computer Using Educators (CUE), and contains many useful sessions at a fabulous price ($175 including food). For more information see http://otc10.org/ .

Among other @ONE workshops, 'Building Online Community with Social Media', offered by Michelle Pacansky-Brock, promises to be a really good online course  August 2-27.  See http://www.onefortraining.org/node/313 for more information.

Jump in to an open online course on the Future of Education, which runs now through June 7. The course will focus on developing methods and mechanisms for making sense of change patterns. Future-focused thinking is an important skill for all educators, leaders, and administrators. During the eight-weeks of this course, we will explore approaches to separating "the nonsense" from "the potential" proclamations of education's future. Just sign up for an account and go -- no formal registration or entry requirements. See http://www.edfutures.com/ for more information.

The Best Read this month is our very own Pedagogy First! blog, where candidates for the online teaching certificate have been posting tips, analyses and responses to the use of tools which can enhance on-site and online teaching. Take a look!

Certificate News

The Program for Online Teaching certificate has been revised. The certificate is an in-house, independent program designed to develop online pedagogical skills and help instructors experiment with and select appropriate tools for student learning.  It takes a minimum of two semesters as part of the POT community, and eight POT workshops or POT-approved classes, to complete a certificate.

Our current certificate candidates have already been engaging in extensive reflection activities, have their blog feeds posted at the POT site, and are completing their workshops and other requirements by June to earn a certificate this semester.

The next cohort for the certificate begins now, with a deadline of February 1. Certificate candidates spend the first semester experimenting with various pedagogies and tools, while blogging as part of our Pedagogy First! community blog. During the second semester, candidates will apply their learning to an online, on-site or hybrid class, blogging as they go.

All workshops taken in previous semesters still count toward the certificate. See the list of requirements at the POT website.

Not ready to start now? Our next cohort begins September 1.

Online Seminars

@ONE offers a number of online courses at only $40 for California faculty -- see http://onefortraining.org/online-courses .  Most of these count for the Technology Applications requirement for the certificate, although some may count in other areas. @ONE's focus tends to be technological rather than pedagogical, although their classes and workshops allow for direct application to your own classes.

Their lunch-and-learn seminars also allow for experience taking an online workshop: http://onefortraining.org/seminars .

POT site news

We are currently designing a new open, blog-style website. Sometime soon, the POT site will move out of our Moodle installation into this more accessible format. No passwords will be required, and our resources and materials will be more readily available. Watch for more news on this....

Happy online teaching!

Lisa

Another project is a grid based on applying Chickering and Gamson's Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education to current online practices. When completed, the chart will showcase the wide variety of techniques that can be used to create great online classes. Come add your activities to our wiki.

Louisa's recorded online workshop Time-Saving Tips for Online Teachers is now available at the site.

ONLINE LEARNING EXPERIENCES

One of the things we keep hearing over at POT is how great it is when instructors take an online class as a student before they teach online. Don't have time for a full class? That's OK -- online learning opportunities are happening all the time!

A few Tuesday night sessions (through Dec 8) are left of Alec Couros' open class "Social Media and Open Education" online through the University of Regina. This graduate class has become famous in the online community for its open approach: Alec welcomes non-registered participants. Course wiki is at http://eci831.wikispaces.com/ .

[For those in the POT certificate program, attending this class for the remaining sessions can count for OT500 (Current Trends and Theory) or OT300 (Technology Applications).

The 2009 MOOC (Massively Open Online Course) focusing on Connectivism continues through Dec 6, and it's not too late to jump in. The focus is connectivism and other learning theories, as taught by experts George Siemens (the inventor of connectivist theory) and Stephen Downes. Class wiki is at http://ltc.umanitoba.ca/wiki/Connectivism .

Two sessions (Nov 24 and Dec 8) remain in the online Social Media Seminar Series through the Global U: "Social Media: Trends and Implications for Learning". Hosted by the Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education, this is a free seminar that meets live online, and is hosted by George Siemens and Dave Cormier, who often differ in their opinions.

This series also counts for OT500 credit for certificate folks. URL is http://aace.org/GlobalU/seminars/socialmedia/ .

FINAL FIRST FRIDAY WORKSHOP IS DECEMBER 4

One online session remains this semester:

Dec 4: Online session: Building Community (Pilar Hernández) -- online, 11:00-12:50 pm

Sign up at the flex site: http://www.miracosta.edu/flex.

Happy online teaching!

A number of MCC faculty are currently earning their Online Teaching Certificate -- you can see their blogs and wikis documenting their progress at the POT website.

Participants should plan on completing all activities for obtaining a certificate by June 30. The certification page has been updated to include all August 17 workshops.

Instructors whose wikis show clearly documented and completed certificate requirements by the end of June will be awarded MiraCosta's first Certificates for Online Teaching.

TEACHING AND TECHNOLOGY LISTSERV REVIVED

We have had a number of requests to create a way for instructors who use electronic technologies for their classes to talk together, and it is clear that email is preferred to a web-based forum. So POT has revived the Teaching and Technology Listserv, a moderated list for faculty. Please come subscribe at http://tiny.cc/teachingandtech.

FIRST FRIDAY FOR BEGINNERS

On Friday, May 1, 1-2:50 pm, Jim Sullivan and I will offer a workshop for newbies to online/hybrid/tech-enhanced teaching, a discussion of online pedagogy and teaching tips. Bring your concerns and issues, as this will be an interactive workshop. Room T413.

SO MUCH COOL STUFF!

The new POT site is bursting with tutorials, video, podcasts, and handouts, most of them creating by your MiraCosta colleagues.

Please do take a look! Go to our website and you'll be led into Moodle. If you don't already have one, just create a New Account for yourself.

"ONLINE TEACHING" DEFINED

You don't have to be teaching an online class to benefit from the Program for Online Teaching workshops and programs! Our focus is on pedagogy, and the selection of appropriate tools to do what you want to do, whether in the classroom or in a hybrid or online class.

FIRST FRIDAY WORKSHOPS

POT's remaining workshops this semester are the First Friday of each month from 1-2:50 pm in room 4607. Each counts for two hours flex time, and satisfies certain components of our online teaching certificate:

Mar 6 -- "Elluminate for Real-Time Online Teaching"
Pilar Hernández and Donna Marques

April 3 -- "Web 2.0 for Teaching and Student Projects"
Kristi Reyes and Eli Clarke

May 1 -- "Beginning Online Teaching"
Jim Sullivan and Lisa M. Lane

See http://www.miracosta.edu/flex for information and to sign up.

THIRD THURSDAY ONLINE MEET-UP

Faculty interested in using technology for teaching continue to meet online in Elluminate the Third Thursday of each month at 8:30 pm. This semester's discussions and show-and-tell will emphasize using audio and video to communicate with students and colleagues.

To join us, go to the POT page at http://www.miracosta.edu/onlineteaching, and sign up for a New Account if necessary. On the Third Thursday, come to the site and join us using the link at the top of the page. If you have a microphone and/or webcam, that's great, or just listen and participate with text.

All sessions are recorded and archived, so if you miss one be sure to go to the POT site to view them later.

(Those teaching or otherwise engaged on Thursday nights may be particularly interested in the March 19 session, since it's during Spring Break.)

ETUDES USERS SUMMIT

The first annual ETUDES users summit is in Los Angeles on April 23-24. See http://etudes.org/summit.htm for more information. Cost is under $200 to attend.

TECH-ED CONFERENCE *FREE* to MCC faculty

TechEd is a fabulous Educational Technology conference taking place March 22-25 in Ontario, CA. While supplies last, register for free pass at http://www.techedevents.org/mcc/ . See http://www.techedevents.org/ for more information.

WEB 2.0 NEWS

VoiceThread --
If you are using VoiceThread, there are new features for groups that will be useful for your classes. See http://tinyurl.com/aqxr3z. If you don't know VoiceThread, it's a way to present a slideshow (or even a single image) and have students comment via voice microphone, telephone, text or video to create a conversation.

TeacherTube --
A number of faculty are using YouTube to present and communicate with their classes. But have you heard of TeacherTube? http://teachertube.com provides an alternative forum for uploading and sharing educational videos.

Social bookmarking --
Freeway flyers and those of us who work on multiple computers might consider social bookmarking services like Delicious (http://delicious.com) or Diigo (http://www.diigo.com). Aside from their "social" components, saving bookmarks to such services make it possible to access your saved sites from any computer with an internet connection. And using the toolbar buttons they provide makes bookmarking very easy.

TechEd has a lot of sessions and a huge exhibit hall, and it's not that far to travel: http://www.techedevents.org/. Contact Bob Edelbrock, since we may still have a free pass deal.

-- SDCCD ONLINE TEACHING EXCELLENCE SYMPOSIUM: APRIL 25
So close to home, this half-day conference is free and focused on online teaching at community college. Sponsored by San Diego City College, Mesa College, Miramar College and including workshops and demos. And it's free: http://www.sdccdonline.net/faculty/otes/

-- CCC's ONLINE TEACHING CONFERENCE IS AT MIRACOSTA:
JUNE 5-6
Here's one you can attend even closer to home (it moves around California, since's it's sponsored by CVC and @ONE) -- this year we're hosting! I'll be presenting on "Enhancing Online Teaching with Web 2.0". http://www.cccone.org/08Conference/

MOODLE PILOT
What is Moodle? Moodle is a Course Management System that replaces Blackboard and provides a framework for online classes and supplemental websites. MCC is currently piloting Moodle through the Technology and Pedagogy Committee. The POT site is located in a Moodle class (http://miracosta.mrooms.net/), and faculty have been trying it out for classes this year. Interested faculty should contact Robert Kelley, new TAP chair, at rkelley@miracosta.edu .

MOODLE TRAINING
Faculty participating in the Moodle pilot, or wanting to learn to use Moodle, should be aware of a hands-on workshop offered by @ONE January 9-11 at Evergreen Valley College in San Jose. See http://www.cccone.org for more information.

GREAT SITE FOR ONLINE INSTRUCTORS
The Illinois Online Network has a large collection of useful resources for online instructors, including tutorials and articles on preparing online classes, and a list of types of activities that can be done online: http://www.ion.uillinois.edu/resources/

JOIN THE PROGRAM WEBSITE
Please join the POT website at http://miracosta.mrooms.net/. You will find many resources for online instructors, workshop information, discussion forums. ELLUMINATE is Ready!
For some time, MCC has had free access to CCCConfer's web conferencing system through the Chancellor's Office. But now the system has been improved!
CCCConfer has moved to a product called Elluminate, which offers real-time conferencing for a small group or a whole class, including chat, whiteboard, web browsing, and audio. You can reserve times at the website (http://www.cccconfer.org).
GREAT NEWS: Blackboard users can use the system directly inside Bb! Under Tools -> Communication you will see "Elluminate Live!". You can "Create an Elluminate Session" with start and end times, and even Share the session across several Bb classes! You can also record the session for later use. What a great way to do office hours and synchronous sessions with online students!

October Tip
You can create an annotated image, or your students can, on Flickr. Upload a photo or artwork to Flickr (http://www.flickr.com), and use "notes" to create annotations students see when they move their mouse over the images.
View a sample at: http://tinyurl.com/2rvlwx .

But I don't teach online!
Even if you don't teach full classes online, many of the computer-based pedagogical strategies we discuss at the Program can be used to develop any electronic or web-based technique you might want to use, in the classroom or out. Animations, charts, and images can help visually oriented students understand material better, and more and more instructors are having students construct their own learning materials in online environments. Most rooms at MiraCosta are now Technology-Enhanced Classrooms (TECs) with computers, internet connection and data projectors, making application in class much easier!

#3: July 2007

POT SITE HAS MOVED AND HAS MORE FEATURES!
The Moodle pilot is being used to house the Progam website. You will need to simply set up a New Account to get in at http://miracosta.mrooms.net/course/view.php?id=13 . I think you'll like it! Please join the Discussion Forum and we can work on online teaching issues together! The Resource page, workshops and all materials are there.

MOODLE PILOT
TAP's Moodle pilot permits a handful of instructors to offer a course or two in Moodle this year to test it as a learning management system. Because the account was opened so late in the year, not many folks have been willing to offer a course for fall, though spring could fill fast. If you are interested in using Moodle for a fall course, or playing around in Moodle, or creating a supporting website in Moodle for an on-site class, please contact me (llane@miracosta.edu). Because ETUDES will be phased out next year, ETUDES users have first priority.

Moodle information and resources include (these are linked inside the site):
- a cool YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_o1fMQsfzoQ
- my page on using Moodle for instructors: http://www.miracosta.edu/home/llane/moodlehelp/
- my tutorial for students using Moodle at http://lisahistory.net/moodletutweb

FALL WORKSHOPS (all listed on the new POT site)
You can use the PDP webpage at http://www.miracosta.edu/Instruction/PDP/enroll.htm to enroll in our workshops for Fall:
* Tips and Tricks
(including test pools, blogs, turnitin.com, reducing images, and assessing discussion)
* Game or Parallel Universe?TM -Second Life
* Interactive Powerpoint
* Roundtable on Course Design in Course Management Systems
(Blackboard, Moodle and ETUDES/Sakai)
* Creating Appealing Web Pages (Photoshop)
* Faculty Mentorship for Online Elements and Pedagogy

In addition, AIS is offering workshops in Blackboard and Web 2.0.

ONLINE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TIP OF THE MONTH
Consider using RSS feeds for keeping track of trends in your discipline. All this means is having a page on the web that shows the "headlines" and summaries of newspaper articles, journals, blogs and other updated information as it comes in. One easy way to start is to go to Yahoo, set up an account, and click on My Yahoo! to create your page. You can even add movie times for the theatres near you, weather reports, and baseball scores! RSS just means that the source of the information releases it to be picked up by your page.

BLACKBOARD TIP OF THE MONTH
To make it easier to keep copies of multiple choice or matching questions for quizzes, design them in Word and use a Blackboard Test Generator like the one at BYU Idaho, which has great how-to instructions (http://www.byui.edu/onlinelearning/testgen/index.htm). That way, you'll be able to reformat the questions for using in another system at a later date.

Happy online teaching!

Program for Online Teaching News #2: May 2007

Just more notes to online teachers and others who have come to the Program's workshops!

Please take my Blackboard survey
I am doing research for both myself and the Program for Online Teaching to determine how Blackboard is being used for online classes, and what needs there are for assistance, at MiraCosta. It is a quick, no fuss survey (no passwords or anything) at http://www.lisahistory.net/phpesp/public/survey.php?name=bb7 . Thanks!

@ONE Online Conference is free!
Yes, you can pay and attend in Fremont, but you can register to attend as an online participant for free if you are a California Community College employee. The conference is June 11-12. Register at http://cccone.org/07Conference/index.htm .

Fall flex workshops
We are planning some great workshops -- summaries and information are now available at the Program website (http://www.miracosta.edu/onlineteaching).

During fall flex, we'll have:
* Tips and Tricks
(including test pools, blogs, turnitin.com, reducing images, and assessing discussion)
* Game or Parallel Universe?TM -Second Life
* Powerpoint with Audio and Interactive Powerpoint
* Roundtable on Course Design in Course Management Systems
(Blackboard, Moodle and ETUDES/Sakai)
* Creating Appealing Web Pages (Photoshop)
* Faculty Mentorship for Online Elements and Pedagogy (see below)

Plus there will be two roundtables during Fall semester:
* Beyond Text
* Improving Student-Student and Student-Faculty Interaction

New Mentoring Program
Robert Kelley and Linda Shaffer are leading the new "Faculty Mentorship for Pedagogy & Online Elements" flex activity, designed to support faculty who will be teaching classes online or integrating new online elements into their on campus classes. Contact lshaffer@miracosta.edu for more information -- she'd like to hear from folks who are interested in being a mentor or "mentee" -- both earn flex credit for their participation, up to fifteen hours, in Fall.

Sample Moodle class
Would you like to see what a real class looks like in Moodle instead of Blackboard? Program members are invited to create an account to enroll and see my History 111 class at http://www.lisahistory.net/moodle/course/view.php?id=18 . Be sure to post in the Comment forum!

Blackboard Tip of the Month: Keep It Clean
To avoid confusing students, you can hide elements in Blackboard that you are not actually using. To do this, go to the Control Panel. Select Course Menu. Check the "Modify" button for each area ("Communication" and "Student Tools") and make Unavailable anything you aren't using. If you aren't using entire Menu links (such as "Staff Information"), use this process to uncheck "Available for Student/Participant users". That will make those links disappear (don't worry, you can make them available again if you want them later!).

Happy online teaching,

Lisa
