This award, sponsored by the MiraCosta College Foundation, represents the highest academic honor the college bestows. It is given annually to five exceptional students nominated by the faculty for their academic excellence and community involvement. These outstanding scholars have demonstrated a rigorous commitment to their studies with a minimum GPA of 3.5 in degree-applicable courses. They are recognized for their academic work's breadth, depth, and rigor.

2024 Medal of Academic Merit Recipients:

Michaela Garcia has leveraged her artistic talents to create meaningful community connections and advocacy opportunities at MiraCosta College. As Chair of the Inter-Club Council and President of the Fine Arts Club, Garcia has fostered an inclusive and dynamic environment for all students. Her leadership extends beyond the arts, impacting various aspects of campus life and embodying the spirit of academic and extracurricular excellence.

Anne Kelley began her academic career at MiraCosta College at just 13 years old and quickly overcame her initial fears of math to excel in the field. Now an associate degree holder in math, Kelley’s passion for STEM has led her to impactful roles such as club president and community tutor. Her academic excellence and leadership have significantly enriched the MiraCosta community.

Kenneth Pilco, serving as the 2023-2024 Student Trustee, has shown exceptional leadership and commitment to community service. Pilco’s journey from struggling high school student to academic achiever with a 4.0 GPA is a testament to his resilience and the supportive environment at MiraCosta College. His advocacy work, especially within the PUENTE program and as Legislative Affairs Director, highlights his dedication to civic engagement and education.

Natalie Trautt has been an exemplar of dedication to the sciences. From early interests in theoretical physics to her current research focus on genetic disorders at the Salk Institute, Trautt’s academic journey reflects a relentless pursuit of knowledge and a desire to contribute meaningfully to the scientific community. Her leadership and academic excellence make her a standout scholar at MiraCosta College.

Cody West’s journey from a challenging upbringing in Wisconsin to academic excellence at MiraCosta College is a compelling story of resilience and redemption. Facing a troubled past marked by substance abuse and legal issues, Cody moved to San Diego in search of a new beginning. Despite initial setbacks, his commitment to change led him to seek treatment and re-enroll at MiraCosta College, this time with renewed determination.

Cody found the resources and community needed to thrive through the college's Transitions program, which supports students impacted by incarceration. His academic efforts have been exemplary, achieving a perfect 4.0 GPA in Computer Studies and Information Technology. Beyond academics, Cody has shared his recovery story to inspire others, contributing to educational materials and speaking at events.

Each recipient will be awarded a medal to be worn at commencement, and their achievements will be recognized in the Commencement Program. Additionally, their MiraCosta College transcripts will be specially noted to reflect this honor.

MiraCosta College congratulates these distinguished students on their achievements and looks forward to their continued success in their future endeavors.
