Great Shakeout Earthquake Drill- Oct. 15 at 10:15 a.m.

10/15/2020
The world and national news are constant reminders that communities around the world are experiencing emergencies caused by extreme weather conditions. These natural disasters are a reminder that communities in California are susceptible to earthquakes.

The annual Great California ShakeOut Drill is scheduled for October 15, at 10:15 a.m. Even though  many MiraCostans are working via an online modality, it is important to practice at home (or wherever you are). Please Drop, Cover, and Hold at 10:15 a.m. to prepare yourself in the event of a large earthquake.

Here are some suggestions to ensure you, your family, friends, and colleagues are prepared for a disaster:

  • PRACTICE PREPAREDNESS: With anything, practice makes perfect and that is why on October 15 at 10:15 a.m. You are encouraged to use this time to practice your preparedness.
The Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills are annual opportunities to learn and practice earthquake safety with millions of people worldwide. Each year, ShakeOut participants in schools, businesses, nonprofits, government agencies, neighborhoods, organizations, and households all across the world practice “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” and other aspects of their emergency plans. The goal of ShakeOut is to encourage people and organizations to be prepared to survive and to recover quickly when the next big earthquake happens. Be prepared and learn more about earthquake readiness and the ShakeOut event.
  • KEEP INFORMATION CURRENT. It does not matter if you are a student, faculty or classified professional, make sure the emergency contact information MiraCosta College has on file is current so you can receive texts, calls, and emails. Students, keep your information current on SURF and faculty and classified professionals you can update your information current on MiraCosta College's Workday system (note: you will need to log in with your MiraCosta single sign on).

  • ASSEMBLE A “GO BAG.” For your own safety and comfort, always have a “go bag” assembled in your home, office, and vehicle. Click here for a list of items to include in your “go bag.”

  • PROTECT YOUR PROPERTY. Be proactive to protect your property. While homeowner/renter insurance requires fire coverage, many are not covered for earthquakes or floods. The California Earthquake Authority site is user friendly and provides information and quotes to homeowners, as well as renters, on insurance options. It is worth the time to check it out.

If students have questions or concerns, they can call the CARE hotline: 442.262.2200. The CARE hotline will provide information about resources available to students on and off campus.
