ASL and Spanish

It’s fun to learn languages, especially when you get to use your whole body to express yourself. Come and enjoy words, stories, and songs in both American Sign Language and Spanish. Our new language class will be fun and hands-on. You will explore culture, dance, and food. You won’t come out fluent, but you will know a LOT of fun phrases, useful expressions and a way to communicate with those you never could before!

Awesome Authors
5–8 grade • July 7–11 • 9 a.m.–12 p.m.
Do you have an idea for a story and want to see it published? Do you like writing creatively? If you do,
this is the class for you! Learn how to choose settings, characters, and build a strong plot. Write your story and
bind it into a book that is YOURS! 
Materials fee: $20 collected on first day of class (Cash or check made out to instructor).

Etiquette                 
5–8 grade • July 7 – 11 • 1 p.m.–4 p.m.
2–4 grade • July 14 – 18 • 1 p.m.–4 p.m.
Etiquette expert, radio personality, and author Elaine Swann will teach the fundamental skills of everyday
manners at home and school. Interactive and hands-on, instruction will include topics such as hygiene and
grooming, communicating with mom and dad, table manners and note writing. The workshop will also cover
school culture issues including communication with teachers and staff, lunchtime manners, good sports
behavior, dealing with jokes & gossip, respect among peers, and more.

Everything Japanese
2–4 grade • July 7–11 • 1 p.m.–4 p.m.
Make and eat sushi, create origami, learn to draw Manga style cartoons, practice speaking and writing
Japanese. Enjoy the wonder, beauty, history and culture of Japan during this highly interactive and hands-on
class. You will learn about the country’s traditions and customs, listen to popular Japanese music, and
learn a small piece of their incredible history. The creative portion of this class will give you the opportunity
to practice the language, taste the food, and experience the art of Japan. By the end of this class, you will
be the expert in your family and ready to take them on a tour through Japan!

Iron Chef
5–8 grade • July 28–Aug 1 • 9 a.m.–12 p.m.
2–4 grade • July 28–Aug 1 • 1 p.m.–4 p.m.
As a young chef, you will experience hands-on techniques that will turn your cooking into delicious meals, while
having fun. It’s something new everyday and often from exotic places! The history and culture of food will also
be discussed. Your class will culminate in an Iron Chef competition the final day of class. Long hair must be
contained and students must wear close-toed shoes.
Materials fee: $30 collected on first day of class (Cash or check made out to instructor).

Creative Writing
2–4 grade • July 7–11 • 1 p.m.–4 p.m.
In this class, students will learn the basics of good story writing and what makes a good story work. They’ll create characters, plots, and dialogue, and also learn the basics of producing and publishing a novel. At the end of class they will have completed a story book, designed their own cover and illustrations, and read their story for the class.

Mathemaniacs
2–4 grade • July 14–18 • 9 a.m.–12 p.m.
5–8 grade • July 14–18 • 1 p.m.–4 p.m.
Whether you love math or hate math, we can make math fun while learning concepts in creative and original
ways. We will use mathematics to discover the design, symmetry and geometrics in the world around us and in
art. Every day will have hands-on projects and experiments to go beyond classroom math. NOTE: this is not a remedial math course.

Magical Arts
2–4 grade • July 7–11 • 1 p.m.–4 p.m.
5–8 grade • July 14–18 • 1 p.m.–4 p.m.
Work with Michael Johnson, one of California’s top magicians, to amaze your friends with your new-found
magical talent. Michael’s unique style of interactive magic brings excitement and fun to every crowd and a great
message to each child. Make your own “magic” kit to take home and “wow” your family!

Woodworking
5–8 grade • July 28–Aug 1 • 1 p.m.–4 p.m.
If you’ve always wanted to try woodworking but don’t know where to begin, this is the class for you. Build several projects to take home! You will learn to use hand tools, jigsaw, drills and the band saw. This class is designed to give students a valuable introduction to woodworking so they can gain interest and confidence by having fun creating their first projects.
