The Academic Reading Community is committed to improving student success by supporting reading across the disciplines while strengthening a strong sense of community among administrators, faculty, staff, and students.

Are you interested in learning about some of the ways you might improve your students' abilities to contextualize, understand, and retain what they read in your discipline? Want to learn from those trained in the nationally recognized Reading Apprenticeship framework? The ARC is compiling strategies which help students take more productive notes, become more active readers who think about the content of readings, and become metacognitive about their reading processes so they can adapt from one course to another. The ARC invites interested faculty to join them to build the academic reading skills MiraCosta students need to succeed in our classes.

The Academic Reading Community supports students’ reading skills by engaging faculty across the disciplines in effective classroom practices.  Faculty develop a repertoire of discipline-specific strategies which they can integrate into their curriculum.  The ARC seeks to foster and maintain an academic reading community of faculty and students.  Through our collective efforts, we can help students develop literacy skills necessary to be successful in college and beyond!

“I’ve always had trouble retaining the information I’ve read. This has caused me more frustration than I care to admit. I never realized that there are multiple techniques than can eliminate that problem. Learning to annotate each paragraph on sticky notes with my thoughts, reactions, and a brief summary helped me retain the information and pick up where I left off. Annotating may sound tedious but it’s actually far more productive than re-reading regularly.”
